Position Summary

The Emergency Department Registered Nurse assesses, plans, coordinates, and delivers skilled nursing care while applying professional nursing standards and evidence-based practices. The RN provides care ranging from non-urgent medical concerns to life-threatening emergencies while working collaboratively with physicians, advanced practice providers, and interdisciplinary healthcare teams.

What You'll Do

Clinical Care & Patient Assessment

  • Perform comprehensive patient assessments, obtain detailed health histories, and document current symptoms.
  • Triage patients using clinical judgment while considering both physical and psychosocial needs.
  • Develop, implement, coordinate, and evaluate individualized patient care plans.
  • Monitor patient conditions and respond quickly to changes in status.

Emergency & Critical Care

  • Provide emergency nursing care for medical, trauma, pediatric, geriatric, women's health, and behavioral health patients.
  • Manage Basic Life Support (BLS) needs and stabilize patients until evaluated by a provider.
  • Recognize adverse trends from monitoring equipment and initiate appropriate interventions.
  • Assist physicians during examinations, procedures, diagnostic testing, and treatments.

Medication & Treatment Administration

  • Prepare, administer, and document prescribed medications.
  • Monitor and report adverse reactions.
  • Initiate and manage IV therapy.
  • Clean, treat, and bandage wounds.
  • Support life-saving and limb-saving interventions as needed.

Patient & Family Education

  • Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatments, medications, and recovery plans.
  • Promote injury prevention, wellness, and disease management.
  • Support patients in understanding and managing ongoing health conditions.

Documentation & Compliance

  • Accurately document patient assessments, treatments, and outcomes in a timely manner.
  • Maintain appropriate supplies and equipment necessary for emergency care delivery.
  • Report suspected abuse in accordance with Alaska Statutes and mandatory reporting requirements.
  • Adhere to all organizational policies, procedures, and regulatory standards.

Qualifications

Required Education

  • Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) from an accredited nursing program
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred

Required Experience

  • Minimum two (2) years of experience as a Registered Nurse, including:
    • At least two (2) years in an Emergency Department setting

OR

  • Graduate Registered Nurse working under the direct supervision of an approved preceptor until competency requirements and credentials are completed.

Required Licenses & Certifications

Candidates must possess or be able to obtain:

  • Alaska Registered Nurse (RN) License
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
  • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC)
  • NIH Stroke Scale Certification (NIHSS)
