Registered Nurse – Adult Cardiac Intensive Care Unit

Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour day shifts (7 AM – 7 PM)
Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday)
Holiday Requirement: Every other holiday
Scheduling: No self-scheduling or block scheduling for travelers
Floating: Required to float to every level of care and take a full team

Unit Details

• 20 private, monitored beds
• Patient ratios vary by acuity: 1:1, 1:2, or 2:1
• Charge nurses and house supervisors available 24/7; charge nurses sometimes take patient assignments
• Patient care technicians (PCTs) present with ratios typically 1:12–1:15, varying by staffing
• Respiratory therapists available 24/7

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

• Post open heart surgery patients (CABG, valve repairs/replacements, dissections, AAA, vascular procedures, carotids)
• STEMI, unstable angina, unstable NSTEMI
• Cardiogenic shock, cardiomyopathy, severe heart failure
• Targeted temperature management (hypothermia)
• Transcutaneous and transvenous pacing
• TAVRs and other cardiac ICU care needs
• Ventilated patients, including overflow from other ICUs (including COVID patients)
• Upcoming: post VAD placement and post heart transplant patients

Specialty Equipment & Lines

• Intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABPs), Impellas, Swan-Ganz catheters, ECMO, external pacemakers, continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT)
• Lines: PICC, midlines, central venous catheters (CVC), Swan-Ganz, arterial lines (radial and femoral)
• Temporary pacemakers frequently used
• Multiple electrophysiology (EP) patients

Required Skills & Experience

• Minimum 2 years of solid Cardiovascular ICU (CVICU) experience required; more experience preferred
• Must be able to start immediately without additional training on unit-specific equipment or patient population
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-stress environment
• Strong assessment, critical thinking, communication, organization, teamwork, and time management skills
• Ability to follow protocols and physician orders precisely
• Positive attitude, motivation, and compassion essential
• Must be able to interpret cardiac monitor strips independently (Philips monitoring system)

Clinical Responsibilities

• RN required to titrate multiple drips including dopamine, dobutamine, levophed, epinephrine, norepinephrine, vasopressin, cleviprex, propofol, fentanyl, versed, insulin, heparin, esmolol, among others
• Some drips are set rate, others titrated per protocol or physician order
• Troubleshoot respiratory equipment such as ventilators, CPAP, BiPAP, heated high flow, and nitric oxide

Required Certifications & Licenses

• Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Illinois
• Minimum 2 years of Cardiovascular ICU (CVICU) experience, with CVICU experience within the last year
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Dress Code

• No specific scrub color required
• Appearance must be professional: clean, appropriate fit (not too tight or loose)
• Scrubs are not provided

This position is ideal for experienced CVICU nurses comfortable with complex cardiac patients, advanced monitoring, and critical care interventions.
