We are seeking an experienced and compassionate Addictions RN to join our multidisciplinary healthcare team. This advanced nursing role is dedicated to providing expert clinical care for individuals undergoing withdrawal management and substance use treatment. The ideal candidate will possess strong clinical assessment skills, extensive knowledge of addiction medicine, and a passion for helping patients achieve safe, successful recovery outcomes.
As a subject matter expert in withdrawal management, the Addictions RN-Advanced works both independently and collaboratively with medical providers, nursing staff, and behavioral health professionals to ensure the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care. This position also serves as a clinical resource and mentor to nursing team members while supporting quality improvement initiatives and operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Assessment and Withdrawal Management
- Perform comprehensive nursing assessments during admission and throughout treatment.
- Evaluate patient eligibility for withdrawal management services and coordinate appropriate referrals when needed.
- Monitor patients throughout the withdrawal process, providing supportive care and timely nursing interventions.
- Respond effectively to medical and behavioral health emergencies.
- Conduct routine screenings and point-of-care testing, including blood alcohol content (BAC), drug screens, urinalysis, and pregnancy testing.
- Accurately document assessment findings, treatment plans, interventions, and patient progress.
Substance Use Assessment
- Complete evidence-based substance use assessments and screenings.
- Communicate findings to the healthcare team and contribute to individualized plans of care.
Care Coordination and Discharge Planning
- Facilitate patient discharges according to medical orders and established protocols.
- Provide patient education and coordinate follow-up care and community resources.
Medication and Clinical Oversight
- Maintain inventory and monitoring of controlled medications in accordance with facility policies and regulatory requirements.
- Notify patients and providers of abnormal test results and ensure appropriate follow-up care and education.
Clinical Leadership
- Provide clinical supervision and mentorship to LPNs and CNAs within their scope of practice.
- Review withdrawal assessment tools such as CIWA and COWS and provide coaching and education as needed.
- Serve as a role model and resource for excellence in addiction nursing practice.
- Assist with clinical operations and support leadership coverage when necessary.
Quality Improvement
- Lead and participate in quality improvement initiatives.
- Utilize data and clinical outcomes to enhance patient care and operational effectiveness.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to advance program goals and patient outcomes.
Minimum Qualifications
Required
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Alaska.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred; alternatively, equivalent qualifying nursing experience as outlined by organizational requirements.
- Minimum of two (2) years of clinical nursing experience.
- Certified Addictions Registered Nurse (CARN) certification (or equivalent), or ability to obtain within one year of hire.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Ability to successfully pass required background checks.
Preferred
- Experience in addiction medicine, withdrawal management, or substance use treatment.
- Experience working with Alaska Native, American Indian, or other culturally diverse populations.

- Advanced knowledge of withdrawal management and substance use disorders.
- Ability to prioritize care, identify patient needs, and implement appropriate interventions.
