Registered Nurse (RN) – Medical Surgical (Post-Op Surgical Unit) 

Location: Saint Cloud, MN
Unit: Surgical Care Unit (Med Surg – Surg 1 RN)
Contract Duration: 13 Weeks
Start Date: 08/24/2026
Shift: Night | 3x12 Hours (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Patient Ratio: 1:3–5
Weekend Requirement: Every Other Weekend

Job Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive nursing care to adult and geriatric post-operative medical-surgical patients in a fast-paced surgical care unit.
• Perform comprehensive patient assessments, monitor vital signs, and identify changes in patient condition.
• Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized nursing care plans for post-surgical patients.
• Care for patients recovering from general surgery, bariatric surgery, vascular surgery, urology, plastic surgery, gynecologic surgery, and trauma procedures.
• Administer medications, IV therapies, blood products, insulin, heparin, PCA therapy, and other prescribed treatments.
• Manage post-operative equipment and devices including chest tubes, NG tubes, PEG tubes, JP drains, PICC lines, central lines, wound vacs, and surgical drains.
• Perform wound assessments, dressing changes, ostomy care, feeding tube management, and peripheral IV care.
• Monitor respiratory status and provide oxygen therapy, BiPAP/CPAP support, HFNC, suctioning, and other respiratory interventions as needed.
• Monitor telemetry, recognize patient deterioration, and respond appropriately to rapid response and emergency situations.
• Collaborate with physicians, therapists, pharmacists, case managers, and interdisciplinary teams to coordinate patient care.
• Educate patients and families regarding medications, recovery expectations, wound care, mobility, and discharge planning.
• Accurately document patient assessments, treatments, and outcomes using Epic.
• Float to similar medical-surgical units as required based on staffing needs.

Requirements

• Active Minnesota RN License.
• Minimum 1 year of recent Medical-Surgical RN experience.
• First-time travelers may be considered based on clinical experience.
• Current BLS certification required.
• Experience caring for post-operative surgical patients.
• Preferred experience with:
  • Chest tubes
  • Wound VACs
  • PICC and Central Line management
  • Blood product administration
  • Telemetry monitoring
  • Ostomy and feeding tube care
  • Respiratory support (BiPAP/CPAP, HFNC)
  • Post-hemodialysis care
  • Trauma and orthopedic surgical patients
• Strong assessment, critical thinking, communication, and time management skills.
• Willingness to float to other comparable units as needed.
