NICU Travel RN – Unit Notes
Important Submission Requirements
- Do NOT submit travelers with license hits related to medication diversion or patient endangerment.
- If discovered after submission, the contract will be immediately canceled.
- EPIC experience is 100% required.
- Minimum 2 years of NICU experience (firm requirement).
Unit Overview
- NICU Level: II
- Beds: 20
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:1 to 1:3, depending on patient acuity and staffing
Required Certifications
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
Patient Population
Common diagnoses include:
- Extremely premature and premature infants
- Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia (BPD)
- Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE)
- Feeding intolerance
- Respiratory support patients
- Sepsis/Meningitis
- Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome (NOWS)/Eat, Sleep, Console (ESC)
- Hyperbilirubinemia
Required Clinical Skills
Must be able to care for infants:
- ≥32 weeks gestation or >1500 grams
- Nasal Cannula (NC)
- High-Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC)
- CPAP
- NAVA ventilation
- Conventional ventilators
- Feeding pump management
IV Drips
RNs titrate drips: Yes
Common drips include:
- Blood pressure medications
- TPN/D10
- Insulin
Leadership & Support
- Charge Nurse: Yes
- House Supervisor: Yes
- Nurse Aides: None
Provider Coverage
- Neonatologist in-house 24/7: No
- ARNP/PA coverage: Yes
Respiratory Equipment
- HFOV
- HFJV
- Conventional ventilators
- CPAP
- HFNC
- Nasal Cannula (NC)
Monitoring
- Telemetry available
- Nurses interpret telemetry strips
Scheduling
- Three 12-hour shifts per week
- Four-week schedules
Weekend Requirement
- May be scheduled every weekend
Holiday Requirement
- Possible, based on contract and scheduling needs
Call/Standby
- If census is low or staff not needed, traveler may be placed on standby
Floating Requirements
May float to:
- Pediatrics to care for NICU graduates
- Pediatric patients up to 12 months of age
- Serve as a 1:1 sitter for a behavioral health postpartum patient while assisting with well-baby care
Dress Code
- Royal Blue scrubs
Orientation
- 1–2 orientation shifts specific to the unit
