Emergency Department (ER/ED) Overview
Level 3 Trauma Center | STEMI & Stroke Receiving Facility
High-reliability ED focused on safety, teamwork, customer service, and zero harm.
Department Layout
- 25 ED beds across 2.5 zones
- 3 trauma bays
- 3 triage rooms
- Hazmat shower and flood tent available for mass casualty events
- Fast Track: 4 rooms adjacent to ED (used intermittently)
- No LPNs in department
Patient Volume & Acuity
- Average census: ~109 patients/day
- Common diagnoses:
- Abdominal pain
- Diabetes
- Hypertension
- STEMI/NSTEMI
- Stroke
- Motor vehicle accidents
- GSWs/stabbings
- Trauma patients
- Pediatric and psych patients may board; higher acuity pediatrics may transfer out
Staffing
- RN ratios: 1:4
- Goal staffing:
- 8-room zones staffed with 3 RNs + 1 CNA
- Charge nurse per shift (may take patients, especially nights)
- CNAs:
- 1 per zone
- Assist with EKGs, provider support, and department needs
- ED pharmacist: typically 12-hour coverage (9a–9p)
Required Experience & Certifications
Required:
- Minimum 1 year ED experience
- Trauma experience required
- Triage experience required
- 2–3 completed travel assignments at different facilities (no extensions)
Certifications:
- BLS
- ACLS
- PALS
- TNCC
- ENPC preferred
Preferred:
- Trauma bay experience
- Epic experience
Clinical Skills Required
Traveler must be able to:
- Manage critical drips
- Perform procedural sedation (adult & pediatric)
- Manage blood products and rapid infuser
- Understand filter tubing requirements
- Interpret telemetry independently
- Manage patients requiring:
- CPAP
- BiPAP
- Airvo/Optiflow
- Ventilator support
Providers
- 1–4 physicians per shift
- PA/NP coverage
- No dedicated pediatric physician
Support Services
- Security: 24/7 in ED
- RT: 24/7
- CT/X-ray adjacent to ED
- Phlebotomy available 24/7
- RN responsible for IV blood draws
- RNs transport acute patients when needed
Scheduling
Typical shifts:
- 1p–1:30a
- 2p–2:30a
- 4p–4:30a
- 6p–6:30a
Scheduling:
- Initial weeks: fill staffing gaps
- Later: scheduler works around availability
- Template scheduling may allow 5 consecutive days off every 3–4 weeks
Requirements:
- Every other weekend (EOW)
- Holiday rotation possible
- Call/callback may be required if needed
- Floating generally not required
Dress Code
- Navy blue scrubs
Orientation
- 1–2 days with preceptor
- Leader rounding
- Chart reviews
- Ongoing feedback as needed
