Unit: Surgical Med Surg/Oncology
Unit Size: 31 beds
Shift Options:
- Days: 7:00 AM–7:30 PM
- Nights: 7:00 PM–7:30 AM
Charting: Meditech
First-Time Travelers: Accepted with strong experience
Parking: Free
Position Overview
Seeking an experienced RN for a combined Surgical Med Surg and Oncology unit. Nurses care for a diverse population of medical, postoperative, hospice, and inpatient oncology patients. Candidates must be flexible, team-oriented, and comfortable managing complex surgical patients.
Travelers assigned to administer chemotherapy must have recent Oncology/Chemotherapy experience and an active ONS Chemotherapy Provider Card.
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 1 year of recent Med Surg experience
- Strong Med Surg experience required
- First-time travelers may be considered
- Oncology and chemotherapy experience required for chemotherapy assignments
- Must be comfortable with complex postoperative care
Required Certifications
- BLS
- NIHSS
- Active ONS Chemotherapy Provider Card
OCN certification is not required.
Patient Ratios
- Standard day-shift assignment: 1:5–6
- Chemotherapy assignment: approximately 1:3–4
- Ratios may be reduced when CNA coverage is unavailable
- Nurses may provide primary care for 1–2 patients within their assignment when working with a CNA
Required Clinical Skills
- Epidural management
- PCA and pain medication management
- Surgical drain management
- Ostomy care
- Chest tube management
- Wound care and wound VACs
- General postoperative recovery
- Postoperative orthopedic care
- PICC line management
- Safe chemotherapy administration when assigned
Staffing and Support
- CNA ratio approximately 1:8
- Shift Unit Supervisors available, but they may carry patient assignments
- Unit Secretary available on days from 7:00 AM–7:30 PM
- Central telemetry monitoring with monitor technicians available 24/7
- Hospitalist coverage available 24/7
- Respiratory Therapy available 24/7
- Shift huddle completed before every shift
Floating
Travelers may float to:
- Combined Surgical Med Surg/Oncology
- General Med Surg
Scheduling
- Every other weekend or equivalent required
- Facility attempts to provide travelers with a consistent pattern schedule, but changes may occur
- Unit assignments are available through the API scheduling system or staffing office
- Holiday requirement is generally 1–2 holidays during the summer or winter season
- For night-shift staff, the holiday begins on the evening before
- For day-shift staff, the actual holiday date is observed
- Optional on-call opportunities may be available
- Overtime may be offered but is not required
Requested Time Off
- Up to 5 days of RTO may generally be approved
- Requests exceeding 5 days require leadership review
Orientation
- One day of general orientation, including Meditech training
- One 12-hour clinical orientation shift covering applicable units

- Pyxis medication dispensing system
- Meditech EMR
