Schedule
- Shift: 12-Hour Variable
- Day Shift: 8:00 AM – 8:30 PM
- Night Shift: 8:00 PM – 8:30 AM
- Variable Scheduling: No guarantee of permanent days or nights throughout the assignment.
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Holiday Requirement: Required to work 2 of 4 holidays. If scheduled for Thanksgiving or Christmas, the other major holiday is off.
- On-Call: May be placed on low-census call depending on patient acuity.
- Blocked Scheduling: Not accommodated.
Requirements
Required Certifications
- Active South Dakota RN License
- AHA BLS
- CPI (Preferred before start; may obtain during assignment)
Required Education
- Graduate of an approved Nursing Program
Required Experience
- Minimum 1 year Behavioral Health/Psychiatric RN experience
- Candidates with less than 1.5 years require manager approval.
- First-time travelers accepted only with 2+ years of experience.
Clinical Skills
Candidates must be experienced and comfortable with:
- Adult and Pediatric Behavioral Health
- Physical restraints and patient take-down procedures
- Verbal de-escalation techniques
- Seclusion and restraint management
- Medication administration (PO & IM injections)
- Patient assessments
- Admission screenings
- Care planning and documentation
- Progress notes
- Minor wound care
- Vital signs
- Glucometer testing
- EKGs (training provided)
- Telephone and verbal physician orders
- Columbia Suicide Risk Screening
- Patient belongings documentation
- Discharge planning
- Team nursing model

- Beds: 52
- RN Ratio: 1:8
- Psych Tech Ratio: 1:10
- Charting: Epic
- Epic experience preferred.
- Candidates without Epic require CRT approval.
- Medication Dispensing: Omnicell
Support Services
- 24/7 Security (equipped with tasers)
- Behavioral Emergency Response Team (BERT) available 24/7
- Panic alarm assigned to every caregiver
- Hallway, medication room, and nurses' station surveillance cameras
- Charge Nurse available 24/7
- On-call Psychiatrist/Physician available 24/7
- Daily laboratory services
- Behavioral Health staff draw STAT labs
- Night Resource Nurse (11:00 PM–9:30 AM)
Orientation
RN Orientation includes:
- 2 facility orientation shifts
- 1 day of online learning modules (I-Learns)
- 2 departmental orientation shifts
Floating
- May float between the three Behavioral Health units at the off-site facility.
- Techs may float to the Emergency Department or inpatient towers when overstaffed.
- Floating is only within the nurse's scope of practice.

- RN/LPN: Navy Scrubs

- Active South Dakota RN License

- Epic experience preferred
- Minimum 1 year experience (manager approval required if under 1.5 years)
Additional Information
- Travelers must reside at least 100 miles from any Monument Health facility.
- Former Monument Health employees must wait 1 full year before returning as travelers.
- Candidates must understand they will care for both pediatric and adult psychiatric patients.
- Travelers must be physically capable of assisting with patient restraints and emergency behavioral interventions.
- Team nursing model is utilized throughout the unit.
- No RTO is permitted during the first three weeks of August due to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
- Variable shifts mean travelers should expect a mix of day and night assignments throughout the contract.
- This assignment is ideal for experienced Behavioral Health nurses who are comfortable in an acute psychiatric environment, have strong de-escalation skills, and enjoy working with both pediatric and adult patient populations.
