Registered Nurse (RN) – Labor & Delivery (L&D)
Location: W.W. Hastings Hospital – Tahlequah, OK
Shift: 12x3 (Nights)
Position Summary:
W.W. Hastings Hospital is seeking an experienced Labor & Delivery Registered Nurse (RN) to provide exceptional, patient-centered care to mothers and newborns throughout labor, delivery, postpartum recovery, and newborn care. The Women's Services Unit delivers approximately 850–900 infants annually (about 75 births per month) and consists of 5 Labor & Delivery beds and 10 Postpartum beds, providing comprehensive care for mothers and infants from admission through recovery and discharge.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assess, monitor, and provide nursing care to antepartum, laboring, postpartum, and newborn patients.
- Perform comprehensive maternal and fetal assessments, recognizing and responding promptly to changes in patient or fetal condition.
- Develop and implement individualized nursing care plans based on patient assessments, physician orders, and evidence-based practices.
- Monitor fetal heart tracings, uterine contractions, maternal vital signs, and labor progression.
- Assist physicians and certified nurse midwives during vaginal and cesarean deliveries.
- Administer prescribed medications, IV fluids, blood products, oxytocin, magnesium sulfate, and other obstetrical therapies.
- Operate and monitor specialized equipment, including fetal monitors, infusion pumps, pulse oximeters, cardiac monitors, and neonatal resuscitation equipment.
- Provide immediate emergency interventions for obstetric and neonatal emergencies, including maternal hemorrhage, shoulder dystocia, fetal distress, and neonatal resuscitation.
- Deliver comprehensive postpartum care, including pain management, maternal assessments, breastfeeding support, newborn care, and discharge education.
- Educate patients and families regarding labor, delivery, postpartum recovery, newborn care, breastfeeding, medications, and discharge instructions.
- Accurately document assessments, interventions, medications, patient responses, and care plans in the electronic medical record (EMR).
- Collaborate with obstetricians, pediatricians, anesthesiologists, lactation consultants, and interdisciplinary healthcare teams to ensure safe, high-quality care.
- Delegate appropriate patient care responsibilities to Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) and unlicensed personnel while providing clinical oversight.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and therapeutic patient care environment while ensuring adequate supplies and equipment are available.
- Promote patient safety, infection prevention, ethical nursing practice, and compliance with hospital policies and regulatory standards.
Minimum Requirements:
- Minimum 2 years of Labor & Delivery RN experience.
- Active Oklahoma RN License or Compact (Multistate) RN License.
- Current BLS, ACLS, NRP, NIH, STABLE certifications and 4 Stroke Annual Certificate.
- Strong maternal-newborn assessment and fetal monitoring skills.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to successfully complete pre-employment credentialing, including background check and drug screening.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and climb stairs throughout the shift.
- Ability to lift and transfer patients and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced Labor & Delivery environment while responding to obstetrical emergencies.
