Registered Nurse (RN) – Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU)

Location: New Brunswick, NJ 08901
Shift: Day/Night | 3x12 Hours
 

Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced CVICU Registered Nurse (RN) to provide high-quality care for critically ill cardiovascular patients in a fast-paced intensive care setting. The ideal candidate will have recent CVICU experience caring for fresh open-heart patients and be proficient with advanced cardiac monitoring and critical care equipment.
 

Schedule

  • Shift: 3x12 Hours
  • Block scheduling not available
  • Every other weekend required
  • Holiday coverage required, as applicable

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of current CVICU experience
  • Candidates with SICU experience may be considered if they received initial training in a CVICU
  • First-time travelers accepted

Required Certifications

  • BLS
  • ACLS
  • NIHSS
  • NJ RN License
  • Stroke CEUs

Required Clinical Experience

Cardiovascular Critical Care

  • Fresh Open Heart Recovery
  • Post Cardiac Surgery (Directly from the OR)
  • Post Cardiac Surgery (Not Directly from the OR)
  • Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG)
  • Valve Repair/Replacement
  • Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR)

Required Hemodynamic Monitoring & Cardiac Skills

  • Pulmonary Artery Line (Swan Ganz) Monitoring
  • FloTrac/Vigileo Monitoring
  • Temporary Pacemakers
  • Arterial Line (A-Line) Management
  • Chest Tube Management
  • Interpretation and Management of Dysrhythmias
  • Obtain and Interpret 12-Lead ECG/EKG
  • Titrate Cardiac Drips
  • Titrate Vasoactive Drips

Required Equipment Experience

Candidates must have experience with one of the following:

  • Impella
  • Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP)
  • CRRT using Prismax
  • OR documented experience caring for fresh open-heart cases

Respiratory Skills

  • Ventilator Management
  • Care of Ventilated Patients
  • BiPAP/CPAP Management
  • High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC)
  • Interpretation of Arterial Blood Gases (ABGs)
  • Suctioning (ETT/NT)

Renal Experience

  • Chronic and Acute Renal Failure
  • CVVHD/CRRT

IV Therapy & Critical Care Skills

  • Central Line Care and Management
  • PICC Line Management
  • Starting and Maintaining IVs
  • Blood Product Administration
  • Continuous IV Sedation
  • Continuous IV Paralytics/Neuromuscular Blockade
  • Procedural Sedation Administration and Monitoring
  • Emergency Medication Administration
  • IV Insulin Protocols

Neurological Experience

  • Acute Stroke/CVA Management
  • Lumbar Drains
  • Hypothermia Protocol (Arctic Sun)

Patient Population

Care for adult and geriatric patients, including:

  • Fresh Open Heart Patients
  • Ventilated Patients
  • Patients with Chest Tubes
  • Patients with Lumbar Drains
  • Chronic and Acute Renal Failure

Patient Ratios

  • 1:1–2
  • Ratios may vary based on patient acuity and if floated

Floating

Required to float, as needed, to:

  • All ICU units
  • PACU (ICU holding patients)
  • Emergency Department (ICU holding patients)
  • Cardiac Intermediate Care (IMC) Units

Work Environment

  • Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU)
  • Epic electronic medical record (preferred)
  • Adult and Geriatric patient population

Preferred Experience

  • Previous Charge Nurse experience
  • Epic charting experience
