Description
Position Summary
The Labor and Delivery RN provides comprehensive nursing care to pregnant patients throughout labor, delivery, recovery and the immediate postpartum period. This position supports mothers and newborns in a rural healthcare environment and works closely with physicians, midwives, nurses and other clinical staff to ensure safe, compassionate and timely care.
Responsibilities
- Assess and monitor patients throughout labor, delivery and postpartum recovery.
- Monitor fetal heart rates, contraction patterns, maternal vital signs and labor progression.
- Identify changes in maternal or fetal condition and initiate appropriate interventions.
- Assist physicians and midwives during vaginal deliveries and emergency obstetric procedures.
- Prepare patients and assist with cesarean-section deliveries when required.
- Administer medications, IV fluids, blood products and treatments according to provider orders.
- Provide immediate newborn care, including assessments, stabilization and identification of complications.
- Respond to obstetric emergencies, including postpartum hemorrhage, fetal distress and hypertensive complications.
- Educate patients and families regarding labor, delivery, breastfeeding, newborn care and postpartum recovery.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic medical record.
- Follow infection-control, medication-safety and patient-identification procedures.
- Coordinate patient transfers to higher levels of care when services are unavailable locally.
- Participate in on-call, weekend and holiday coverage based on departmental needs.
- Provide culturally respectful care to patients from Nome and surrounding Alaska Native communities.
Required Qualifications
- Active Registered Nurse license.
- Current BLS certification.
- Current ACLS certification.
- Current Neonatal Resuscitation Program certification.
- Previous Labor and Delivery nursing experience.
- Experience with fetal monitoring and obstetric emergencies.
- Strong assessment, communication and critical-thinking skills.
- Ability to work independently in a rural or remote healthcare environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- AWHONN Intermediate or Advanced Fetal Monitoring certification.
- Current PALS certification.
- Previous travel-nursing or critical-access hospital experience.
- Experience caring for antepartum, postpartum and newborn patients.
- Experience stabilizing patients for emergency air or ground transportation.
