Position Overview

Heywood Hospital is seeking an experienced Operating Room RN for a travel contract assignment. The ideal candidate will have strong perioperative nursing experience and be comfortable working collaboratively with surgeons, anesthesiologists, surgical technicians, and the perioperative team.

This position is responsible for maintaining patient safety throughout the surgical procedure and ensuring all perioperative practices are performed according to established standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Collaborate with the surgeon, anesthesiologist, clinical coordinator, and surgical technicians throughout surgical procedures.
• Maintain sterile fields and ensure proper handling and sterilization of surgical supplies and instruments.
• Verify patient identification, consent forms, operative procedure, and surgical site before surgery.
• Prepare and oversee the selection of supplies, equipment, and instrumentation for surgical cases.
• Apply principles of aseptic and sterile technique.
• Safely position and transfer patients using appropriate body mechanics.
• Ensure perioperative techniques and practices meet established standards.
• Perform and maintain accurate sponge, needle, and instrument counts.
• Immediately communicate count discrepancies to the surgeon according to policy.
• Properly identify, label, handle, and care for surgical specimens and cultures.
• Provide safe, compassionate patient care throughout the surgical experience.
• Assess and reassess patient needs and implement appropriate nursing interventions.
• Administer medications and IV therapy according to orders, protocols, and policies.
• Assess and manage patient pain appropriately.
• Maintain thorough and accurate clinical documentation.
• Prioritize patient care and respond appropriately to emergency situations.
• Promote patient safety and identify potential risks or opportunities to reduce errors.
• Provide patient and family education as appropriate.

Requirements

• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
• Operating Room nursing experience strongly preferred.
• CNOR strongly preferred.
• Current Massachusetts RN license required.
• ACLS required upon hire, OR candidate must have an active BLS card and obtain AHA ACLS within 60 days of hire.
• Ability to work effectively in an environment with competing priorities.
• Excellent communication and multitasking skills.
• Positive, flexible, and team-oriented attitude.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is an experienced OR RN/Circulator who is confident with sterile technique, surgical instrumentation, patient positioning, surgical counts, specimen handling, and intraoperative patient safety.
