Clinical Polysomnographic Technician

Job Summary

The Clinical Polysomnographic Technician performs and demonstrates proficiency in polysomnographic diagnostic testing. The technician must have a strong understanding of basic anatomy and physiology, as well as sleep/wake pathology.

Excellent communication skills are essential for providing patient education, ensuring patient safety and comfort, and effectively communicating patient and clinical situations with physicians and other members of the care team.

Strong attention to detail is critical, as the quality and accuracy of polysomnographic data are the responsibility of the technologist. The technician must remain vigilant in a non-stimulating environment, effectively interpret data from multiple sources, and anticipate the need for appropriate interventions in accordance with established protocols.

The technician must know when to consult the physician regarding patient care, respond quickly and calmly to emergency situations, and maintain strict patient confidentiality at all times.

Key Responsibilities

• Review patient information in the medical record and verify orders for the scheduled study.
• Explain testing procedures, setup protocols, and expectations to patients and caregivers, answering questions as needed.
• Set up patients according to facility policies and AASM guidelines.
• Perform polysomnographic studies in accordance with established policies and AASM guidelines.
• Closely monitor patients for clinical and physiological events and take appropriate actions to obtain accurate and complete sleep/wake data.
• Perform titration and split-night studies according to facility policies and physician orders.
• Determine when sufficient data has been obtained and appropriately conclude the study.
• Carefully remove electrodes and transducers following the study and assist patients with hygiene needs as necessary.
• Score sleep studies in accordance with the AASM Scoring Manual and complete scoring accurately and within established timelines.
• Prioritize study scoring over non-patient-related activities, including continuing education and housekeeping duties.
• Complete monthly Inter-Scorer Reliability assessments.
• Notify the Medical Director, Physician Assistant, and/or Clinical Manager of any adverse changes in the patient’s condition or unusual situations during the sleep study.
• Assist with training and onboarding of new personnel.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Preferred Experience:

• Previous experience in Sleep Medicine

Education Required:

• Associate’s degree from an accredited school/program in Polysomnography

Required Certifications & Licensure

• BLS from AHA, HSI, or American Red Cross
• RPSGT – Registered Polysomnographic Technologist
• New York State Registered Polysomnographic Technician license OR New York State Respiratory Therapist license

Preferred:

• New York State–licensed Respiratory Therapist
