Job Title: Registered Nurse (RN)

  • Agency: Franklin Correctional Facility

Position Overview

  • The Registered Nurse (RN) will provide comprehensive nursing care within a correctional healthcare setting while ensuring compliance with New York State nursing standards, facility policies, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • The RN will support the ongoing medical needs of incarcerated individuals, including those with chronic illnesses, disabilities, and acute medical conditions.
  • The position also plays a critical role in evaluating eligible patients and initiating Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) programs while supporting operations within an 18-bed infirmary that serves multiple correctional facilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive nursing assessments and ongoing evaluation of incarcerated individuals with chronic, acute, and complex medical conditions.
  • Administer prescribed medications, treatments, and nursing procedures in accordance with physician orders and established nursing protocols.
  • Evaluate eligible patients for participation in Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) programs and assist with initiation, monitoring, and ongoing care.
  • Monitor and provide nursing care for patients admitted to the facility's 18-bed infirmary, including individuals transferred from neighboring correctional facilities.
  • Assess, document, and report changes in patient condition, vital signs, and responses to treatment.
  • Develop, implement, and update individualized nursing care plans to support continuity of care.
  • Collaborate with physicians, nurse practitioners, mental health professionals, and multidisciplinary healthcare teams to coordinate patient care.
  • Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation, medication records, treatment plans, and nursing notes in accordance with facility policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Respond promptly to medical emergencies and provide appropriate nursing interventions.
  • Educate patients regarding medications, chronic disease management, treatment plans, and health promotion as appropriate.
  • Assist in maintaining medical supplies, equipment, and medication inventory to ensure uninterrupted healthcare services.
  • Maintain infection prevention and control standards throughout the healthcare environment.
  • Perform additional nursing duties and responsibilities as assigned to support correctional healthcare operations.

Work Schedule & Conditions

  • Various shifts available: 6:00 AM – 2:00 PM, 2:00 PM – 10:00 PM, 10:00 PM – 6:00 AM
  • Overtime: Required as needed
  • Travel: Not required
  • Holidays: Required to work New York State holidays as scheduled

  • The facility maintains an 18-bed infirmary that provides care for incarcerated individuals housed both onsite and from neighboring correctional facilities, resulting in a high patient turnover.
  • Nursing staff provide care for individuals with chronic illnesses, disabilities, acute medical conditions, and those participating in Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) programs.
  • Registered Nurses collaborate with multidisciplinary healthcare teams to ensure safe, effective, and patient-centered care while maintaining compliance with correctional healthcare standards.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Licensed and currently registered to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of New York.
  • Strong clinical assessment, medication administration, and patient care skills.
  • Experience in correctional healthcare, medical-surgical, emergency, long-term care, behavioral health, or acute care settings preferred.
  • Experience caring for patients with chronic illnesses, complex medical conditions, or disabilities preferred
  • Familiarity with Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) programs or willingness to support MAT services is preferred.
  • Knowledge of nursing care planning, infection prevention and control practices, and healthcare documentation standards.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, critical thinking, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary healthcare teams while exercising sound clinical judgment.
  • Commitment to patient safety, confidentiality, regulatory compliance, and professional nursing standards.
