Respiratory Therapist – Travel Assignment
Location: University Hospital, Madison, WI
Start Date: 09/14/2026
Contract Length: 13 Weeks
Shift: Days | 3×12-hour shifts
Shift Time: 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Respiratory Therapist (RT/RRT) for a 13-week travel assignment at University Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin. This position provides respiratory care to pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients in a high-acuity hospital environment.
The ideal candidate will have strong acute-care, critical-care, pediatric, and adult respiratory therapy experience, along with experience in a Level I Trauma Center.
Schedule
- 3×12-hour day shifts
- 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM
- Every other weekend rotation
- 1 on-call shift every 6 weeks
- One winter holiday requirement consisting of 2 block shifts
- Block scheduling is not guaranteed
- Travelers may trade shifts with staff when permitted by facility policy
- Travelers must be willing to float as needed
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of staff Respiratory Therapist experience
- Travel experience required
- Graduate of a CoARC-accredited Respiratory Therapy program
- Current NBRC RRT certification required
- Wisconsin RCP license required; pending Wisconsin license accepted at submission
- BLS certification – AHA only
- Pediatric and adult respiratory therapy experience preferred
- Previous Level I Trauma experience required
- Previous Level II Trauma experience required
- Inpatient/acute-care respiratory therapy experience required
Clinical Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive respiratory care to pediatric and adult patients.
- Administer aerosolized medications and respiratory treatments.
- Perform airway clearance techniques and pulmonary hygiene.
- Provide tracheostomy care and management.
- Manage non-invasive ventilation, including CPAP and BiPAP.
- Manage high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) and mechanical ventilation.
- Provide respiratory support at IMC and ICU levels.
- Assist with intubation and extubation procedures.
- Perform and interpret arterial blood gases.
- Assist with bronchoscopy procedures.
- Provide chest physiotherapy, including vest therapy.
- Assist with ventilator weaning.
- Manage fresh tracheostomies and troubleshoot high-pressure ventilator alarms.
- Collaborate with physicians, nurses, respiratory care leaders, and other interdisciplinary team members.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate respiratory care plans in collaboration with the care team.
- Educate patients and families regarding respiratory treatments and care.
- Document patient care and respiratory interventions accurately in Epic.

- Candidates residing within 50 miles of the facility are not accepted.
- Flu vaccination is required; medical/religious exemptions may be considered.
- COVID-19 vaccination is not required.
- References should be removed from the submitted profile.
- Pass/fail testing with strict criteria is required.
- A telemetry/cardiac rhythm examination is required before start.
Telemetry Exam
Adult exam:
- 100% identification of ventricular fibrillation, ventricular tachycardia, and asystole
- No incorrect answers regarding third-degree heart blocks
- Overall score of 80% or higher
Pediatric exam:
- Ventricular fibrillation
- Ventricular tachycardia
- Asystole
- Sinus bradycardia
- Overall score of 80% or higher
Travelers receive two attempts. If unsuccessful after the second attempt, a cardiac interpretation review course must be completed before a third attempt. Failure after three attempts may result in assignment cancellation.
Parking
On-site parking requires a permit through UW Transportation. Public transportation, park-and-ride, and private parking options are also available.
