Cardiac/Vascular Ultrasound Technologist
Job Title: Cardiac/Vascular Ultrasound Technologist
Location: Saint Francis
Shift: Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM–5:30 PM
Position Overview
The Cardiac/Vascular Ultrasound Technologist performs advanced diagnostic cardiac and/or peripheral vascular ultrasound examinations to provide cardiologists and physicians with accurate diagnostic images and measurements. This role requires strong technical expertise, independent judgment, and the ability to communicate critical findings promptly to physicians and nursing staff.
The technologist also assists physicians during complex procedures in the OR, Hybrid Lab, Cath Lab, and CAD areas, helping reduce procedural risks and support optimal patient outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform advanced cardiac and/or peripheral vascular ultrasound procedures accurately and efficiently.
- Perform adult and/or pediatric cardiac studies, including TEE and stress echocardiography, as applicable.
- Perform peripheral vascular studies, including arterial, renal, and transcranial Doppler examinations.
- Operate ultrasound equipment, transducers, digital networking systems, and ancillary devices.
- Review pertinent patient information and previous reports before procedures.
- Evaluate images and measurements for diagnostic quality and accuracy.
- Recognize abnormal or critical findings and promptly communicate results to the appropriate physician or clinical team.
- Provide preliminary reports and immediate feedback on critical findings when necessary.
- Assist physicians with complex procedures, including:
- TAVR (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement)
- SAVR (Surgical Aortic Valve Replacement)
- TandemHeart
- LARIAT procedures
- Pseudoaneurysm compression
- Other procedures in the OR, Hybrid Lab, Cath Lab, and CAD areas
- Maintain accurate procedural documentation and patient records.
- Complete departmental tracking, charging, and procedural data requirements.
- Schedule patients efficiently and contribute to departmental workflow.
- Participate in quality assurance and National Accreditation activities.
- Maintain equipment, supplies, infection-control standards, and a clean, safe environment.
- Collaborate effectively with physicians, surgeons, nurses, technologists, and other healthcare professionals.
- Maintain patient, employee, physician, and corporate confidentiality.
- Participate in continuing education and maintain required competencies and registry credentials.
- Participate in on-call rotation after regular business hours.
Required Qualifications
- 2+ years of experience preferred/required for the assignment.
- Minimum 6 months of related experience per facility requirements.
- Ability to work independently and exercise sound clinical judgment.
- Strong critical-thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication skills with physicians, surgeons, nurses, and healthcare staff.
- Ability to work effectively with patients and healthcare teams.
- High School diploma or GED required.
- Graduate of a Diagnostic Medical Ultrasound or Cardiac Ultrasound program preferred.
Required Certifications & Licensure
One of the following credentials is required:
ARDMS:
- RDCS – Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer, or
- RVT – Registered Vascular Technologist
CCI:
- RCS – Registered Cardiac Sonographer, or
- RVS – Registered Vascular Specialist
Also required:
- BLS certification
Preferred Skills
Experience with the following is highly desirable:
- Impella
- LVAD
- Strain imaging
- TAVR
- Watchman procedures
Work Environment & Expectations
- Works directly with patients and healthcare customers.
- Collaborates with physicians, surgeons, nurses, and other clinical staff.
- Coordinates activities of others without direct supervisory responsibility.
- May lead others performing similar work without formal supervisory authority.
- Frequently interacts with Director-level and senior leadership.
- Requires independent decision-making with general review at the final stages.
- Must maintain compliance with hospital and departmental policies.
- Must demonstrate flexibility as departmental and hospital priorities change.
- Participates in QA, education, accreditation, and professional-development activities.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is an experienced cardiac/vascular sonographer with strong diagnostic imaging skills, current RDCS/RVT/RCS/RVS credentials, BLS certification, and the ability to independently perform advanced studies. Candidates with experience supporting TAVR, Impella, LVAD, strain imaging, and Watchman procedures are especially desirable.
