Mother Baby/Postpartum RN – Night Shift
Job Title: Registered Nurse – Mother Baby/Postpartum
Facility: Bozeman Deaconess Hospital
Location: Montana
Shift: Night Shift
Contract: 13 weeks
Position Overview
The Mother Baby/Postpartum Registered Nurse provides comprehensive nursing care to mothers and newborns during the postpartum period. The RN supports patients through the transition from delivery to recovery and discharge, addressing physical and emotional needs while providing education, assessment, treatment, and ongoing support.
The ideal candidate will have strong Mother Baby/Postpartum and L&D experience and be comfortable working independently in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess the physical and emotional needs of postpartum patients and initiate appropriate interventions.
- Provide safe, individualized nursing care to mothers and newborns.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized plans of care.
- Monitor patients for changes in condition and communicate concerns promptly.
- Provide patient and family education related to postpartum recovery, newborn care, and transition home.
- Promote a safe environment for patients, families, and staff.
- Practice modified primary nursing and collaborate with the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
- Maintain accurate and timely patient documentation.
- Serve as a catch/transition nurse as needed.
- Act as Charge Nurse when assigned.
- Float to other departments as a safety companion when required.
- Apply sound clinical judgment in complex or stressful situations.
- Support quality-improvement, education, and professional-development activities.
- Maintain compliance with hospital policies, DNV requirements, and applicable nursing standards.
L&D Experience
L&D experience is preferred, including experience with:
- Antepartum care
- Intrapartum care
- Preoperative care
- Circulating
- PACU/recovery
Required Qualifications
- Current, active Montana Registered Nurse (RN) license.
- Mother Baby/Postpartum nursing experience.
- Ability and willingness to practice modified primary nursing.
- Ability to work independently with minimal oversight.
- Strong assessment, critical-thinking, communication, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a busy and stressful environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, and teamwork.
- Willingness to work varied shifts, weekends, and after-hours assignments.
- Must be able to function as Charge Nurse when needed.
- Must be willing to float as a safety companion.
Required Certifications
- American Heart Association BLS/BCLS
- STABLE certification
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) – current certification required; recertification every 2 years
Professional Expectations

- Provide leadership within the professional practice setting.
Stroke Competency
The RN must comply with hospital stroke-care policies and education requirements, including:
- Two hours of initial cerebrovascular disease/stroke education within one year of hire.
- One hour of stroke education annually thereafter.
Schedule & Physical Requirements
- Night shift
- Regular attendance required.
- May require work beyond a standard 40-hour week, weekends, and after-hours shifts.
- On-call work may be required.
- Ability to repeatedly lift up to 50 pounds.
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, twisting, stooping, reaching, and pushing/pulling.
- Continuous fine-finger movements and computer/documentation work.
- Ability to maintain close visual acuity for patient records, screens, and clinical data.
- Ability to make timely decisions and maintain focus in a clinical workflow.
- Exposure to bloodborne pathogens, infectious diseases, medications, chemicals, radiation environments, and emotionally challenging patient/family situations.
Traveler Requirements
- Traveler must reside at least 90 miles from the facility to be eligible.
- Candidates who do not meet the 90-mile residency requirement should not be submitted.
- Facility reserves the right to cancel up to three shifts during the 13-week contract due to low census or unforeseen circumstances.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a confident Mother Baby/Postpartum RN with strong newborn and postpartum assessment skills, current BLS, STABLE, and NRP certifications, and the flexibility to function as a catch/transition nurse, Charge Nurse, and safety
