RN – Progressive Care Unit (PCU)

Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital | Plattsburgh, NY

Join a 341-bed, Level II Trauma hospital on an adult Progressive Care/Telemetry unit caring for higher-acuity cardiac and medical patients.

Assignment Highlights

  • Specialty: PCU / Progressive Care Telemetry
  • Shift: 12-hour Days or Nights, 7a–7p / 7p–7a as posted
  • Patient Ratio: 1:3
  • Experience: Minimum 1 year Tele/PCU experience
  • EMR: Epic – experience within the past 2 years is required and non-negotiable
  • Orientation: 1–2 days
  • Call: None
  • Weekends: Minimum every other weekend; schedule may be adjusted based on unit needs
  • Holidays: Must work 2 of 3 major holiday periods: Thanksgiving, Christmas/Christmas Eve, and New Year’s Day/Eve
  • Block Scheduling: Not permitted
  • Float: Required – travelers are assigned to the Resource Float Team and float first to appropriate units
  • Support: Approximately 3 CNA/PCT staff per shift; telemetry monitoring support
  • Scrubs: Navy blue or white

Required Certifications & Licensing

  • AHA BLS
  • AHA ACLS
  • NIHSS required prior to start
  • NY RN license OR proof of NY license application with application date must be included at submission
  • NY licensing may take approximately 6–8 weeks

Clinical Skills Required
Strong telemetry and progressive-care experience, including:

  • Insulin drips
  • Cardiac drips
  • IV starts
  • Post-cardiac cath care
  • Telemetry monitoring
  • ACLS-level cardiac care

Patient Population
Adult acute-care patients including:

  • Acute coronary syndrome
  • Heart failure
  • Hemodynamic instability/hypotension
  • BiPAP/CPAP patients with compromised gas exchange
  • Post-PTCA/stent patients
  • Minimally titrated inotropic, vasodilator, antiarrhythmic and antiplatelet drips
  • Insulin drip therapy
  • ETOH withdrawal requiring frequent monitoring/sedation
  • Thrombolytic therapy
  • Major vascular surgery and bypass patients
  • Electrical cardioversion
  • Carotid surgery
  • Active rewarming/temperature regulation

Facility Notes

  • Interview-to-offer process runs Monday–Sunday
  • Bi-weekly Monday orientations
  • All employment gaps over 90 days must be explained
  • Complete work history is required, including facility type, bed count, EMR, etc.
  • Reliable personal or rental transportation is strongly recommended; public transportation is not readily accessible
  • All-season or snow tires are recommended November through April
