VA Puget Sound Health Care System – American Lake Campus, Tacoma, WA | Full-Time (1.0 FTE) | Night Shift
Schedule: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, 1800–0700
Position Overview
We are seeking a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) to provide on-site sleep diagnostic and treatment services at the VA Puget Sound Health Care System, American Lake Campus. This is a 1.0 FTE position supporting the full range of polysomnographic services in a state-of-the-art sleep medicine facility, meeting or exceeding standards established by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), the American Association of Sleep Technologists (AAST), and the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT).
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct polysomnographic studies and PAP titrations in accordance with AASM Clinical Practice Guidelines and AAST/AASM PAP Titration Guidelines.
- Explain procedures and ensure patient comfort to optimize data quality; monitor and record sleep stages, heart rate, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, body position, apnea/hypopnea, snoring, nocturnal seizures, bruxism, cardiac arrhythmias, and parasomnias.
- Recognize and correct artifacts to maintain valid, scorable signals.
- Identify urgent clinical concerns and respond appropriately — notify supervisor for noncritical issues, activate VA Code Blue procedures when needed, and initiate CPR when required.
- Ensure all recorded data, scoring results, and technical notes are uploaded and routed per established sleep lab reporting workflows, including timely notification of abnormal findings requiring urgent review.
- Report on time for all scheduled shifts, with physical presence in the Sleep Laboratory at the scheduled start time.
- Prepare PAP supply requests (filters, tubing, masks) as needed and support Sleep Lab quality-control and accreditation activities.
- Support the education and supervision of Health Professions Trainees (HPTs) assigned to the Sleep Medicine/Respiratory Care Service, under the direction of the Chief of Sleep Medicine or designated clinical supervisor.
- Maintain patient safety and privacy in accordance with VA/HIPAA requirements; report patient safety incidents via the VA Patient Safety Reporting System within 24 hours.
Qualifications & Experience
- Current BRPT Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) certification.
- Current BLS certification, maintained throughout the assignment.
- Demonstrated experience scoring sleep studies per the AASM Manual for the Scoring of Sleep and Associated Events.
- Ability to work the required night-shift schedule (1800–0700) and meet VA clinic-wait-time and consult-completion standards.
- Current infection control documentation (PPD/immunizations) as required prior to first duty shift.
- Comfortable working within a VA Medical Center clinical environment and supporting HPT education activities.
Compensation
$91–$105/hour, depending on experience and certifications. Eligible candidates relocating or commuting from outside the local area may qualify for per diem and a one-time travel allowance in addition to the posted rate; details provided during the offer process.
