Position Summary:
The Cardiac Sonographer 1 performs basic to advanced cardiac ultrasound procedures for adult patients, including transthoracic, transesophageal, and stress echocardiography, to assist in the diagnosis and assessment of cardiac abnormalities.
The Cardiac Sonographer prepares patients and equipment, obtains relevant clinical history, performs high-quality echocardiographic examinations, reviews images, obtains required measurements, and adapts examination techniques based on the patient's clinical condition and the diagnostic question.
The role requires a highly skilled and self-sufficient sonographer who can work independently, particularly in a Level I Trauma environment.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Perform basic to advanced cardiac ultrasound procedures using various equipment, techniques, and protocols.
- Perform transthoracic, transesophageal, and stress echocardiography as required.
- Obtain accurate cardiac measurements and high-quality diagnostic images for physician interpretation.
- Identify and assess cardiac abnormalities and appropriately expand or modify examinations when clinically indicated.
- Correlate invasive and non-invasive cardiac diagnostic findings with cardiac anatomy and function.
- Assist cardiologists and physicians in procedure rooms and operating rooms with echocardiographic studies during complex procedures.
- Assist with transesophageal echocardiography procedures, including appropriate measurements and probe sterilization.
- Prepare patients for procedures and explain the examination process.
- Obtain and review relevant patient history, cardiac findings, and pertinent laboratory information.
- Adapt imaging techniques to obtain comprehensive and diagnostically useful echocardiograms.
- Perform daily maintenance of echocardiography equipment and report equipment malfunctions.
- Maintain appropriate documentation and laboratory statistics.
- Follow established echocardiography protocols, quality standards, and infection-control procedures.
- Support IAC accreditation activities and quality-improvement processes as assigned.
- Serve as a resource to physicians, sonographers, staff, and students regarding equipment, techniques, procedures, and cardiac studies.
- Stay current with evolving cardiac imaging technology and implement applicable protocols and standards.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with applicable privacy requirements.
- Communicate effectively with physicians, nurses, sonographers, and other healthcare professionals.
- Perform other duties as assigned by department leadership.
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum 3 years of working experience
- Previous Level I Trauma experience required
- Must be self-sufficient and able to work independently
- Strong knowledge of cardiac anatomy and physiology
- Strong knowledge of echocardiographic principles, instrumentation, and techniques
- Knowledge of cardiovascular ultrasound protocols
- Knowledge of infection prevention and control
- Strong patient communication and interpersonal skills
- Knowledge of medical terminology
- Computer and medical equipment proficiency
