PCU RN – Stepdown

Required Certifications

  • BLS
  • ACLS

Requirements

  • ICU and/or PCU/Stepdown experience required
  • Ventilator experience required
  • Must be comfortable with telemetry monitoring
  • Must be able to interpret telemetry and communicate changes to the physician
  • Experience with titratable drips required

Common Patient Population

  • Post-ICU patients
  • Post-shock and post-stroke patients
  • Pneumonia
  • CHF
  • Post-cardiac arrest
  • Non-DKA
  • Respiratory failure
  • Ventilator weaning
  • Tracheostomy patients
  • Infectious disease cases
  • Patients requiring critical-care-level monitoring

Drips

RNs may titrate:

  • Nicardipine
  • Levophed/pressors
  • Fentanyl
  • Precedex
  • Heparin
  • Insulin
  • Other titratable drips

Schedule & Weekend Requirements

  • 12-hour shifts: 7:00 AM–7:30 PM
  • 3 shifts per week
  • Every other weekend minimum
  • May be required to participate in holiday rotation
  • Travelers are expected to remain flexible based on unit staffing needs

Floating

Travelers may float to:

  • ICU
  • CCU
  • PCU/Telemetry
  • Pulmonary
  • Med-Surg/Telemetry

Typical ratios when floating: 1:4–5

Additional Information

  • PCT support available, typically 1 PCT for 5 patients
  • RT manages CPAP, BiPAP, ventilators, trachs, and high-flow oxygen
  • Centralized telemetry monitoring 24/7
  • Scrub Color: Royal Blue
  • Unit orientation: 2 days with a preceptor
