Required Certifications
- BLS
- ACLS
Requirements
- ICU and/or PCU/Stepdown experience required
- Ventilator experience required
- Must be comfortable with telemetry monitoring
- Must be able to interpret telemetry and communicate changes to the physician
- Experience with titratable drips required
Common Patient Population
- Post-ICU patients
- Post-shock and post-stroke patients
- Pneumonia
- CHF
- Post-cardiac arrest
- Non-DKA
- Respiratory failure
- Ventilator weaning
- Tracheostomy patients
- Infectious disease cases
- Patients requiring critical-care-level monitoring
Drips
RNs may titrate:
- Nicardipine
- Levophed/pressors
- Fentanyl
- Precedex
- Heparin
- Insulin
- Other titratable drips
Schedule & Weekend Requirements
- 12-hour shifts: 7:00 AM–7:30 PM
- 3 shifts per week
- Every other weekend minimum
- May be required to participate in holiday rotation
- Travelers are expected to remain flexible based on unit staffing needs
Floating
Travelers may float to:
- ICU
- CCU
- PCU/Telemetry
- Pulmonary
- Med-Surg/Telemetry
Typical ratios when floating: 1:4–5
Additional Information
- PCT support available, typically 1 PCT for 5 patients
- RT manages CPAP, BiPAP, ventilators, trachs, and high-flow oxygen
- Centralized telemetry monitoring 24/7
- Scrub Color: Royal Blue
- Unit orientation: 2 days with a preceptor
