Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) to join the Respiratory Care team at an adult acute-care, Level 1 Trauma Center in Akron, Ohio. The ideal candidate will have strong clinical experience, excellent assessment and critical-thinking skills, and the ability to provide high-quality respiratory care in a fast-paced hospital environment.
The position primarily supports adult acute-care patients and requires proficiency with respiratory therapy procedures, emergency response, ventilator management, and patient monitoring.
Key Responsibilities
- Review and confirm physician orders and assess patients to determine the appropriateness of prescribed respiratory therapies.
- Provide safe, effective, and patient-centered respiratory care in accordance with department policies and clinical protocols.
- Assess, evaluate, document, and monitor patients' tolerance and response to respiratory treatments and therapies.
- Recognize and communicate unusual patient reactions or changes in condition to physicians, nurses, and other appropriate healthcare professionals.
- Perform a variety of respiratory and pulmonary procedures according to established policies and protocols.
- Respond promptly to respiratory emergencies and participate in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other emergency interventions.
- Administer medical gases and respiratory medications as ordered.
- Set up, operate, troubleshoot, and maintain respiratory care equipment.
- Support mechanical and non-invasive ventilation needs as appropriate to the patient's condition.
- Explain respiratory treatments and procedures to patients and address questions or concerns.
- Maintain a safe environment for patients, visitors, and healthcare staff.
- Promote positive patient experiences through professional and compassionate interactions.
- Complete accurate documentation in the electronic medical record and appropriate billing information for services provided.
- Participate in interdisciplinary patient care teams and quality improvement initiatives.
- Contribute to the development and improvement of respiratory care policies, procedures, and clinical practices.
- Participate in educational activities for patients, families, students, healthcare professionals, and the community.
- Attend department in-services, meetings, and professional education activities to maintain current clinical knowledge.
- Maintain competency and proficiency in respiratory care skills in accordance with regulatory and organizational requirements.
Required Qualifications
- Current Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential.
- Minimum 2 years of respiratory therapy experience.
- Current BLS certification.
- ACLS certification.
- Current/active respiratory therapy license or credential applicable to the assignment.
- Previous experience in an acute-care hospital environment.
- Strong clinical assessment, critical-thinking, communication, and documentation skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a high-acuity, Level 1 Trauma Center environment.
- Epic experience is required.
CRT Consideration
RRT is preferred; however, CRT candidates may be considered if they are Registry Eligible and possess appropriate respiratory care experience.
Equipment Experience
Experience with the following equipment is preferred:
- PB 980 ventilators
- PB 840 ventilators
- V60 non-invasive ventilators
- EPOC handheld blood gas analyzer
- ParaPacPlus transport ventilator
Compliance Requirements
Selected candidates will be required to complete applicable facility onboarding and compliance requirements, which may include:
- Summa competency examination
- Summa skills checklist
- Summa core competencies
- License and credential verification
- Fit testing
- Health statement
- TB/PPD screening
- Drug screening
- Required immunization documentation
- Background and exclusion checks
- Education verification
- Professional references
- Government-issued identification
Additional Assignment Information
- RTO: Maximum of 7 days.
- Interview: Required prior to placement.
- Candidates should provide available interview dates and times with submission.
- The facility is currently accepting candidates for a September 27 or October 4 start date.
- This is a night-shift, long-term assignment supporting adult acute-care patients.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a highly skilled and adaptable respiratory therapist with at least two years of acute-care experience, strong ventilator and emergency-response capabilities, Epic experience, and a commitment to delivering safe, compassionate, and evidence-based respiratory care.
