Surgical Technologist II – CVOR
Specialty: Cardiothoracic / CVOR
Location: Houston, TX 77030
Shift: 6:30 AM – 5:00 PM
Schedule: 4 days/week with one weekday off
On-Call: Required
Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Surgical Technologist II – CVOR to support congenital heart and cardiothoracic surgical procedures. The Surgical Technologist will be responsible for preparing the operating room, handling instruments and supplies, anticipating the surgeon's needs, and assisting with patient-care activities under the direction of the circulating RN.
Critical Experience Required
- Must have cardiothoracic (CT) surgical experience.
- Cardiovascular experience alone is NOT sufficient.
- Must have prior experience scrubbing cardiac bypass / pump cases (CPB).
- Experience with open-heart/cardiac surgery is strongly required.
- Must be comfortable working in a CVOR environment and participating in on-call coverage.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and set up the CVOR according to the patient's age, surgical procedure, and surgeon preference.
- Handle and prepare surgical instruments, supplies, equipment, implants, prostheses, and specialized instrumentation.
- Anticipate the surgeon's needs and ensure necessary supplies and instruments are available.
- Review preference cards and coordinate with the circulating RN when additional supplies or equipment are required.
- Maintain accurate counts of sponges, needles, and instruments according to hospital policy.
- Assist with the proper care, handling, and labeling of surgical specimens.
- Participate in the Universal Protocol and maintain a strong focus on patient safety.
- Perform patient-care-related duties as assigned by the circulating RN.
- Operate and assist with surgical equipment, including electrocautery, suction equipment, sterilizers, microscopes, fiberoptic equipment, and other specialty equipment.
- Maintain knowledge of surgical procedures, instrumentation, supplies, and equipment.
- Participate in in-services and continuing education to maintain professional competency.
- Work effectively with surgeons, nurses, anesthesia staff, and other members of the surgical team.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of experience as a Surgical Technologist.
- Experience in two or more surgical specialties.
- Prior cardiothoracic/CVOR experience.
- Prior experience scrubbing cardiac bypass/pump cases is required.
- Strong knowledge of surgical instrumentation and CVOR procedures.
- Ability to anticipate the needs of the surgeon and communicate effectively.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary surgical team.
- On-call availability is required.
Education
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Completion of an approved Surgical Technology educational program required. This may include qualifying military or U.S. Public Health Service surgical technology training.
Required Certification
One of the following is required:
- CST – Certified Surgical Technologist through NBSTSA
OR - TS-C – Tech in Surgery, Certified through NCCT
