Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced MICU Registered Nurse (RN) to join a 20-bed Medical/Surgical Intensive Care Unit within a Level III Trauma Center. The unit cares for a broad range of critically ill adult patients, offering exposure to complex medical and surgical conditions in a high-acuity environment.

The ideal candidate will have at least 2 years of continuous adult ICU experience, preferably in a MICU setting, with strong telemetry skills and the ability to confidently read and interpret cardiac rhythm strips.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive nursing care to critically ill adult patients in a high-acuity MICU environment.
• Perform detailed assessments, ongoing monitoring, and timely interventions.
• Read and interpret telemetry/cardiac rhythm strips independently.
• Manage patients with complex medical and surgical conditions.
• Monitor for changes in patient status and promptly escalate concerns.
• Collaborate with attending physicians, residents, respiratory therapists, and the multidisciplinary care team.
• Provide patient and family education and support.
• Maintain accurate and timely documentation in Epic EMR.
• Float to Medical/Surgical units when required and safely manage a full patient assignment.

Common Patient Diagnoses

The MICU cares for a diverse adult patient population, including patients with:

• Substance abuse and overdose
• Severe psychiatric conditions
• Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA)
• Sepsis
• Gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding
• Respiratory failure
• Cardiac arrest
• Renal failure
• Cardiogenic shock
• Other complex medical and critical-care conditions

Unit Details

• 20-bed MICU
• Level III Trauma Center
• Adult Medical/Surgical ICU
• Attending physicians and residents are present in the ICU 24/7
• Part of a 400+ bed community hospital
• Hospital includes approximately 220 Med/Surg beds in addition to ICU, maternity, and other services

Staffing & Ratios

MICU:

• High-acuity patients: 1:1 or 1:2 RN-to-patient ratio

When Floating to Med/Surg:

• Approximately 1:4–5 RN-to-patient ratio
• Travelers may be assigned up to 4–5 patients depending on unit needs.

Required Experience

• Minimum 2 years of adult ICU experience – Required
• 2+ years of continuous work experience at one location – Required
• MICU experience strongly preferred
• Strong telemetry competency
• Must be able to read and interpret telemetry strips
• Experience caring for high-acuity and critically ill adult patients

Required Credentials

• Active Massachusetts RN License – Required
• AHA BLS – Required
• AHA ACLS – Required

Schedule

Day / Evening Positions

Day positions are classified as Day Rotate and may rotate between:

• 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM
• 11:00 AM – 11:00 PM
• 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM

Rotation occurs when required by the department.

Night Position

• 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM
• Night shift does not rotate

Hours: 36 or 48 hours/week
Weekend: Every other weekend required

Floating Requirements

Floating is required.

MICU RNs may float primarily to Medical/Surgical units and must be comfortable managing a full Med/Surg assignment.

• Telemetry competency is required.
• Typical Med/Surg assignment: 4–5 patients
