Registered Nurse (RN) – Observation / ER Observation

Location: Tacoma, Washington
Facility: St. Joseph Medical Center

Schedule: 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM, Every Other Weekend (EOW)
Contract: 13 weeks
 

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Registered Nurse (RN) for an ER Observation unit at St. Joseph Medical Center. This unit provides protocol-based care to patients with well-defined diagnoses or presenting symptoms, including chest pain, asthma, congestive heart failure, and other Med/Surg/Telemetry conditions.

• Beds: 8–16
• Average Patients/Day: 8–16
• Patient Ratio: 4:1
• Patient Population: Med/Surg and Telemetry
• Patient Type: Boarding patients awaiting an inpatient room
• Telemetry: Yes – RNs monitor and interpret their own telemetry
• EMR: Epic
• Trauma/ER Environment: ER Observation
• Security: In-house security
• Patient Support: Nurse aides, paramedics, and patient sitters available
• Transport: House transporters available
• Lab: Lab draws available
• Respiratory Support: Oxygen and SVNs
• Charge Nurse/House Supervisor: Yes

Required Qualifications

• Active Washington RN License
• BLS certification
• Med/Surg/Telemetry experience
• Strong telemetry experience
• Ability to work independently in an acute-care/ER observation environment
• Completion of required core mandatory nursing exams

Schedule & Floating

• Shift: 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM
• Every other weekend required
• First to Float
• Primary assignment is St. Joseph Medical Center
• Travelers may be required to float to other Region Two facilities:
  • St. Clare Hospital – Lakewood, WA
  • St. Elizabeth Hospital – Enumclaw, WA
  • St. Joseph Medical Center – Tacoma, WA
• Rate differential applies when floated outside St. Joseph Medical Center
• Floating will be to similar units/floors
• Standby requirement: Yes
• Holiday requirement: None

Orientation

• Unit-specific orientation: 1 day
• First 12 hours of orientation are non-billable

Dress Code

• Navy blue scrubs

Cancellation Policy

• Facility may cancel up to 4 shifts during a 13-week assignment
• For assignments shorter than 13 weeks, up to 3 shifts may be cancelled

Important Eligibility Requirements

• Candidates must not have worked full-time, part-time, or PRN at any CommonSpirit-affiliated facility, including CHI or Dignity, within the past 12 months.
• Candidates must have a permanent residence at least 50 miles from the facility where applicable.
• License can be submitted while awaiting approval, if the candidate is willing to wait.
