Description
The Pediatric Ultrasound Sonographer performs diagnostic ultrasound examinations on infants, children, and adolescents using specialized ultrasound equipment. The sonographer obtains high-quality images for interpretation by radiologists while ensuring patient safety, comfort, and proper positioning throughout the examination.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform pediatric ultrasound examinations according to physician orders and department protocols.
- Perform abdominal, pelvic, renal, bladder, vascular, soft-tissue, and other pediatric ultrasound studies as required.
- Adjust ultrasound equipment settings and transducers to obtain high-quality diagnostic images.
- Select appropriate imaging techniques based on the patient's age, size, condition, and examination requirements.
- Accurately document patient history, clinical information, measurements, and examination findings.
- Recognize and document relevant anatomical structures and abnormalities for radiologist interpretation.
- Ensure proper patient identification and verify exam orders before beginning procedures.
- Explain procedures to children and their parents/guardians in an age-appropriate and reassuring manner.
- Safely position and immobilize pediatric patients when necessary while maintaining comfort and dignity.
- Follow ALARA principles and appropriate ultrasound safety practices.
- Maintain infection-control and patient-safety standards.
- Communicate effectively with radiologists, physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
- Maintain ultrasound equipment and report equipment issues or malfunctions.
- Handle emergency situations appropriately, particularly when working with critically ill or medically complex pediatric patients.
- Maintain accurate electronic medical records and imaging documentation.
Typical Requirements
- Pediatric ultrasound experience strongly preferred/required depending on facility.
- Experience performing diagnostic ultrasound examinations independently.
- Knowledge of pediatric anatomy, pathology, and age-specific imaging techniques.
- ARDMS certification such as RDMS; Pediatric Sonography (PS) certification may be required or preferred.
- BLS may be required.
- Strong communication and patient-care skills, particularly with children and families.
