Position: Labor & Delivery / Postpartum Registered Nurse (RN)
Unit: L&D / Postpartum
EMR: Cerner
Fetal Monitoring System: FetalLink
Shift: 12-Hour Shifts
Day: 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM
Night: 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM
Weekend: 4 Weekend Shifts per 4-Week Schedule
Scrub Color: Navy
Experience: 2–3 Years Required
Travel Experience: At Least 1 Prior Travel Contract Preferred
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Labor & Delivery / Postpartum Registered Nurse (RN) to join a busy maternal-child health department providing care to high-risk obstetric patients and postpartum mothers.
The unit includes 7 L&D beds, 4 triage beds, 2 overflow beds, and 27 postpartum beds with a 5-bed nursery. The department averages approximately 3 births per day and 1,545 births annually.
The ideal candidate will have strong L&D and postpartum experience, advanced fetal monitoring competency, and the ability to care for high-risk obstetric patients across different gestational ages.

- 7 L&D beds
- 4 triage beds
- 2 overflow beds
- Approximately 3 births per day
- Approximately 1,545 births annually
Postpartum
- 27 postpartum beds
- 5-bed nursery
Staffing
- Ratios follow AWHONN guidelines
- Charge Nurse/Shift Manager available for both L&D and Postpartum
- Resource nurses available to assist with breaks
- OB Techs provide support throughout the unit
Patient Population
The department cares for a broad range of obstetric patients, including:
- High-risk deliveries
- Patients across various gestational ages
- Emergency Medical Transport (EMT) drop-offs
- Patients with limited or no prenatal care
- Substance abuse and withdrawal cases
- Medically complex obstetric patients
- Spanish-speaking patient population
Patients requiring a higher level of care may be transferred to UCLA or another appropriate higher-level facility.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive nursing care to laboring and postpartum patients.
- Perform maternal and fetal assessments.
- Monitor fetal heart rate patterns and respond appropriately to changes.
- Manage high-risk labor and delivery patients.
- Provide postpartum and newborn care within scope.
- Circulate for Cesarean-section procedures.
- Assist with vaginal deliveries and other obstetric procedures.
- Provide patient and family education and support.
- Collaborate with OB physicians, neonatologists, anesthesia, respiratory therapy, and other members of the healthcare team.
- Document patient care accurately using Cerner.
- Utilize the FetalLink fetal monitoring system, which interfaces with Cerner.
- Maintain patient safety and follow established obstetric protocols.
Cesarean Section Experience
- C-section experience is required.
- Nurses are not required to scrub C-sections.
- RN must be able to circulate C-section procedures.
- Unit has 2 C-section suites with recovery areas.
Floating Requirements
Floating between L&D and Postpartum is required.
L&D Nurses
- Must have Postpartum experience.
- May float to Postpartum.
- May also float to NICU to care for grower/feeder infants.
Postpartum Nurses
- May float to L&D and assist with appropriate tasks within their scope.
- May also assist in the NICU within their scope.
- L&D experience is not necessarily required for Postpartum nurses, depending on assignment needs.
Required Certifications
- BLS – Required
- ACLS – Required
- NRP – Required
- Fetal Monitoring – Required
- AWHONN Intermediate or Advanced preferred/required based on facility validation
- STABLE – Preferred
Required Experience
- 2–3 years of relevant nursing experience – Required
- Strong L&D experience required for L&D assignments.
- Postpartum experience required for L&D nurses.
- At least 1 prior travel contract is preferred.
- Experience with high-risk obstetric patients strongly preferred.
- Strong fetal monitoring and C-section circulating skills required.
Schedule
Day Shift: 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM
Night Shift: 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM
- 12-hour shifts
- 4 weekend shifts per 4-week schedule
- Holiday coverage is shared with permanent staff.
- Typically, travelers will work one major and one minor holiday.
Call Requirement
Call is optional, but travelers who are willing to take call are preferred.
Candidates should be prepared to discuss their willingness to participate in call during the interview.

Orientation
3 unit-specific orientation shifts
