Position Overview

We are seeking a skilled Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (RN) to join the 30-bed MedSurg 3CC unit. The unit provides care for a diverse surgical and medical patient population, with a strong focus on postoperative recovery, surgical procedures, and medical overflow.

The unit is described as a close-knit team with a positive culture, making communication, collaboration, and teamwork important to success.

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

The unit commonly cares for patients with:

• Total joint replacements
• Spinal surgery
• Urology procedures
• Abdominal surgery, including laparoscopic appendectomy and bowel resection
• Bariatric patients
• Medical overflow
• Colostomies
• Patients with Hemovac and JP drains

Note: GYN patients are cared for on the maternity unit, while cardiac medical-surgical telemetry patients are assigned to the appropriate cardiac MS/Tele unit.

Staffing & Ratios

RN-to-Patient Ratios:

• Days: 1:4–5
• Nights: 1:5–6

Support Staff:

• Nurse Aides/PCTs available
• Approximately 1 tech per 12 patients

A Charge Nurse is present on both shifts. The night Charge Nurse may occasionally take a low-acuity assignment.

Required Certification

• BLS – Required

Experience & Clinical Skills

• Surgical experience is preferred.
• Postoperative nursing experience is preferred.
• Experience with early ambulation is preferred.
• First-time travelers are welcome.
• Strong medical-surgical assessment and patient-care skills are expected.

Drips & Treatments

• RNs are not required to titrate drips.
• Occasional therapies may include:
  • Heparin drip
  • PCA pump
  • TPN

Respiratory Care

• Patients may receive oxygen via nasal cannula.
• Respiratory Therapy performs respiratory treatments.
• RN responsibilities primarily include appropriate patient monitoring and troubleshooting as needed.

Telemetry

• Patients may use remote telemetry packs.
• Monitor Techs are available to read and interpret telemetry.
• RNs are not required to independently read telemetry strips.

Schedule

• Day: 7:00 AM–7:30 PM
• Night: 7:00 PM–7:30 AM
• Manager creates the schedule.
• If rotating days/nights, a 7–7 rotation will not occur more than once per week.
• Block scheduling may be considered if unit staffing needs are met.
• Every other weekend required
• Holiday coverage required as needed

Floating Requirements

Travelers may be required to float to:

• Medical-Surgical
• Telemetry

When floating to telemetry, support will be available for telemetry strip interpretation, while the RN will care for the assigned medical patients in that area.

Unit Expectations

• Bedside shift report is expected.
• Strong communication and teamwork are important.
• The unit maintains a close-knit team environment and values collaboration.

Radius & Eligibility Requirements

• 50-mile radius rule applies.
• Candidates must be outside the 50-mile radius to qualify.
• Candidates may not currently work full-time, part-time, or PRN with any facility associated with CommonSpirit, including CHI and/or Dignity.

RTO Requirements

• RTO must be submitted upfront with the candidate profile.
• Up to 7 days of RTO per 13-week contract may be considered.
• Additional RTO will not be approved after submission.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have strong MedSurg skills, preferably with surgical and postoperative experience, and be comfortable caring for complex surgical patients. A team-oriented, adaptable RN who communicates well and is willing to float based on unit needs will be successful in this role.
