Registered Nurse (RN) – Adult Psychiatric

Job Summary

The Registered Nurse (RN) provides safe, compassionate, and patient-centered nursing care to adult patients in a psychiatric/behavioral health setting. The RN is responsible for assessing patients, developing and implementing individualized care plans, administering medications, monitoring mental and physical health, and collaborating with the interdisciplinary team.

Roles & Responsibilities

• Perform comprehensive nursing assessments of adult psychiatric patients.
• Assess and monitor patients' mental, emotional, and physical health status.
• Develop, implement, and update individualized nursing care plans.
• Administer medications and treatments safely according to physician orders and facility protocols.
• Monitor patients for medication effectiveness, side effects, and adverse reactions.
• Perform ongoing assessments and recognize changes in patient behavior or clinical condition.
• Maintain a safe, therapeutic, and supportive environment for patients.
• Monitor patients for suicidal ideation, self-harm risk, aggression, withdrawal symptoms, and other safety concerns.
• Follow facility protocols for suicide precautions, behavioral emergencies, and crisis intervention.
• Participate in therapeutic communication and establish positive relationships with patients.
• De-escalate patients experiencing agitation, anxiety, aggression, or emotional distress.
• Collaborate with psychiatrists, physicians, social workers, therapists, counselors, and other members of the healthcare team.
• Participate in treatment planning and interdisciplinary patient-care meetings.
• Provide patient and family education regarding medications, treatment plans, coping strategies, and discharge instructions.
• Document assessments, medications, interventions, patient responses, and progress accurately in the EMR.
• Assist with admissions, transfers, and discharges.
• Maintain patient confidentiality and protect patient rights and dignity.
• Follow infection control, medication safety, workplace safety, and behavioral health protocols.
• Respond appropriately to psychiatric and medical emergencies.
• Maintain accurate communication during shift changes and provide thorough patient handoff reports.

Required Qualifications

• Active RN license in the applicable state.
• Previous psychiatric/behavioral health nursing experience preferred.
• Current BLS certification.
• Strong assessment, communication, and critical-thinking skills.
• Ability to work effectively with adult patients experiencing acute or chronic behavioral health conditions.
• Ability to remain calm and professional in high-stress or crisis situations.
