Position Overview

We are seeking a qualified Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (RN) to join the MedSurg 3CC team. This 30-bed unit provides care to a diverse surgical and medical patient population, with a strong focus on postoperative care and recovery.

The unit offers a close-knit team environment and values strong communication, flexibility, collaboration, and quality patient care.

Patient Population

Common patient populations and procedures include:

• Total joint replacements
• Spinal surgery
• Urology procedures
• Abdominal surgery, including laparoscopic appendectomy and bowel resection
• Bariatric patients
• Medical overflow
• Colostomies
• Patients with Hemovac and JP drains

Note: GYN patients are cared for on the maternity unit, while cardiac MS/Telemetry patients are managed on the appropriate cardiac unit.

Staffing & Ratios

RN-to-Patient Ratios:

• Days: 1:4–5
• Nights: 1:5–6

Support Staff:

• Nurse Aides/PCTs available
• Approximately 1 PCT per 12 patients

A Charge Nurse is available on both shifts. The night Charge Nurse may occasionally take a low-acuity assignment.

Required Certification

• BLS – Required

Experience & Skills

• Surgical experience preferred
• Postoperative nursing experience preferred
• Early ambulation experience preferred
• First-time travelers are welcome
• Strong MedSurg clinical and assessment skills

Clinical Care

• RNs are not required to titrate drips.
• Occasional therapies may include:
  • Heparin drip
  • PCA pump
  • TPN
• Oxygen support may include nasal cannula.
• Respiratory Therapy handles respiratory treatments.

Telemetry

• Remote telemetry packs are utilized.
• Monitor Techs read and interpret telemetry.
• RNs are not required to independently interpret telemetry strips.

Schedule

• Day Shift: 7:00 AM–7:30 PM
• Night Shift: 7:00 PM–7:30 AM
• Schedule is created by the manager.
• For rotating day/night schedules, a 7–7 rotation will not occur more than once per week.
• Block scheduling may be considered based on unit staffing needs.
• Every other weekend required
• Holiday coverage required as needed.

Floating

Travelers may float to:

• Medical-Surgical
• Telemetry

When floating to Telemetry, support is available for rhythm/strip interpretation, while the RN will care for assigned medical patients.

Unit Expectations

• Bedside shift report is required/expected.
• Strong communication and teamwork are highly valued.
• The unit maintains a close-knit culture and collaborative work environment.

Traveler Requirements

• 50-mile radius rule applies.
• Candidates must be outside the 50-mile radius to qualify.
• Candidates may not currently be working full-time, part-time, or PRN with any facility associated with CommonSpirit, including CHI and/or Dignity.
• RTO must be submitted upfront.
• Up to 7 days of RTO per 13-week contract may be considered.
• Additional RTO will not be approved after submission.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a flexible and team-oriented MedSurg RN with strong surgical/postoperative experience who is comfortable caring for a varied patient population and floating based on unit needs. First-time travelers are welcome to apply.
