· Number of Beds – 13 ORs

· Number of Staff – 25 RNs / 29 CSTs

· Type of staff:

o M-F

§ 0630-1500: 13 RNs / 13 CSTs to run up to 10 rooms

§ 1500-1700: 8 RNs / 8 CSTs to run up to 7 rooms

§ 1700-1900: 6 RNs / 5 CSTs to run up to 4 rooms

§ 1900-2300: 3 RNs / 2 CSTs to run up to 2 rooms

§ 2300-0700: 1 RN / 1 CST to cover trauma

o Saturday and Sunday

§ 0700-0700: 1 RN / 1 CST to cover trauma

§ Saturday has an additional call team to run two rooms from 0630-1500

o Trauma team (1 RN / 1 CST) available during off hours

o 1 CST for L&D Call

· Patient Ratios – average 50 hours of surgical time (patient in room) Monday – Friday. Weekends vary with Saturday heavier than Sunday.

List typical procedures performed on unit(s):

· Burn: high acuity patients mostly from ICU: wound debridement, skin grafting, dressing change

· Dental: restoration (cavities) and oral maxillofacial

· ENT: T&A through parathyroidectomy and cochlear implants

· Gastroenterology: EGD, colonoscopy

· General - everything

· Gynecology – ablations, vaginal/abdominal hysters

· Neuro – stealth, spinal fusions, discectomy, craniotomy

· Open Heart – CABG, fempop, fistulas

· Ophthalmology – vitrectomy, cataracts, corneal transplant

· Orthopedics – trauma, total joints, sports med

· Plastics – breast augmentation/reconstruction

· Pychiatry – electroconvulsive therapy

· Robotics – gyn, general, urology

· Trauma – damage control resuscitative surgery, neuro, ortho, general

· Urology – cystoscopy, TURB, TURP, stents

Weekends and On call(if any)

· Rotate weekend call every four weeks, call utilized to fill evening/night staffing holes M-R and is evenly distributed among team. Typical call shifts are 2, 4, 8 or 12 hours. Every attempt is made to not schedule more than 60 hours of work and call combined in a week.

The way the call works here is for all staff to take two evening/night shifts per week. These can range from 2-12 hour call shifts. We rotate who takes the longer shifts and who has the shorter shifts, so it is as fair as possible. For the weekends the expectation is that all staff take two weekend shifts per month. These call shifts range from 8-12 hour shifts and include both days and nights. And we do try not to schedule anyone for more than 60 hours of work and call per week.
