Position: Registered Nurse (RN)
Assignment: Travel RN

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced MICU Registered Nurse (RN) to provide high-quality care to critically ill adult patients in a 26-bed Medical Intensive Care Unit. The ideal candidate should have prior MICU experience, strong critical-care skills, and the ability to independently manage and titrate multiple high-acuity medication drips.

Unit & Patient Care

• Unit Size: 26 beds
• Typical Staffing: Approximately 14 RNs per shift
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:1–2; may increase to 1:3 during staffing shortages
• Common Diagnoses: Cardiac arrest, sepsis, neurosurgical conditions, DKA, induced hypothermia, GI bleeding, angioedema, and other complex medical conditions
• Trauma: No trauma cases
• Nurses must be able to read and interpret their own telemetry strips
• Travelers may be the first to float, with floating limited to Stepdown (1:3–4 ratio)

Clinical Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive care to critically ill patients in the MICU
• Independently assess, monitor, and manage patients with complex medical conditions
• Titrate all required medication drips according to patient condition and clinical protocols
• Common titratable medications include:
  • Pressors
  • Sedation
  • Paralytics
  • Antiarrhythmics
  • Insulin
• Collaborate with physicians, respiratory therapists, PCTs, and other members of the interdisciplinary care team
• Respond to emergency situations, codes, and Rapid Response events as needed

Required Qualifications

• Previous MICU experience is required
• BLS – Required
• ACLS – Required
• CCRN – Preferred
• Strong critical-care assessment and clinical judgment skills
• Ability to manage and titrate multiple critical-care medications
• Ability to interpret cardiac rhythms/telemetry independently

Schedule & Requirements

• Shift: 7:00 AM–7:30 PM or 7:00 PM–7:30 AM
• Travelers should provide availability and remain flexible to support unit staffing needs
• Block scheduling is not guaranteed
• Weekend Requirement: At least 2 weekends per 4-week schedule, including Saturday and Sunday
• Holiday: May be required to participate in the holiday rotation
• Call/Standby: None
• Excessive call-ins are taken seriously and may result in termination

Unit Support

• Charge RN: No patient assignment; responds to codes and Rapid Response events
• PCTs: 3 on days / 2 on nights
• Providers: Fellows/Residents in-house 24/7; attending physicians are not on-site 24/7
• Respiratory Therapy: 2 RTs available in the ICU 24/7
• Respiratory Equipment: CPAP, BiPAP, ventilators, and tracheostomy equipment
• RTs manage respiratory equipment; RNs administer breathing treatments as required

Orientation & Additional Details

• Orientation: 2 days classroom + 1 day with a preceptor
• Scrubs: Royal Blue
• Equipment is generally not specifically assigned to travelers
• No trauma cases within the MICU
