Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (Med/Surg RN) 

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced and dependable Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (Med/Surg RN) to provide safe, comprehensive, and patient-centered care in a fast-paced hospital environment. The RN will care for adult medical-surgical patients with a variety of acute and chronic conditions while managing multiple patient needs, coordinating treatment plans, administering medications, and collaborating with the interdisciplinary healthcare team.

Essential Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive Med/Surg nursing care within the RN scope of practice and according to physician/provider orders.
• Perform head-to-toe assessments, develop individualized care plans, implement nursing interventions, reassess patients, and evaluate outcomes.
• Monitor patients for changes in condition and promptly report abnormal findings to the appropriate provider.
• Care for patients with a variety of medical-surgical conditions, including acute illnesses, chronic conditions, postoperative needs, infections, and other general medical conditions.
• Administer medications, IV therapy, oxygen therapy, blood products, and other prescribed treatments safely and accurately.
• Manage IV lines, infusion pumps, and other equipment commonly used in a Med/Surg setting.
• Monitor vital signs, pain levels, laboratory results, intake/output, and overall patient status.
• Recognize changes in patient condition and initiate appropriate nursing interventions and escalation of care.
• Demonstrate competency in cardiac monitoring and rhythm interpretation and take appropriate action when indicated.
• Complete accurate and timely documentation in Cerner in accordance with facility policies and nursing competencies.
• Utilize Care Compass to organize and document assessments, nursing tasks, procedures, and patient education.
• Provide age-appropriate nursing care and ongoing assessment and reassessment of patient needs.
• Assist with admission, transfer, discharge, and care coordination processes.
• Provide patient and family education regarding disease processes, medications, treatment plans, pain management, wound care, safety, discharge instructions, and follow-up care.
• Provide effective handoff communication using SBAR during shift changes, transfers, and changes in patient status.
• Follow infection prevention practices, universal precautions, fall prevention measures, and National Patient Safety Goals.
• Maintain patient confidentiality and protect patient rights, dignity, privacy, and safety.
• Collaborate with physicians/providers, nursing staff, CNAs/PCTs, therapists, pharmacy, case management, and other departments to coordinate patient care.
• Prioritize and manage care effectively for multiple Med/Surg patients in a busy hospital environment.
• Delegate appropriate tasks to assistive personnel while maintaining accountability for patient care.
• Serve as a positive resource and mentor to other nursing staff and support continuous professional development.

Med/Surg Clinical Environment

The Med/Surg RN may care for patients requiring:

• Acute and chronic medical management
• Postoperative and post-procedure care
• IV medications and fluid therapy
• Oxygen therapy and respiratory monitoring
• Wound and skin care
• Pain management
• Infection management
• Cardiac monitoring
• Mobility and fall-risk interventions
• Blood product administration
• Patient education and discharge planning
• Frequent reassessment and escalation of care when patient conditions change

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

This position is performed in a hospital-based Medical-Surgical environment involving frequent patient interaction, interruptions, moderate noise, and a high level of clinical activity.

The RN must be able to safely perform physical activities associated with direct patient care, including:

• Standing and walking for extended periods
• Bending, reaching, kneeling, and repositioning
• Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling
• Assisting with patient transfers and mobility
• Repositioning and turning patients
• Responding to urgent changes in patient condition

The role may involve exposure to blood and bodily fluids, communicable diseases, radiation, chemicals, hazardous materials, and other clinical workplace hazards.
