Emergency Department (ED) Travel RN – Breakdown

Position: Emergency Department RN
Primary Facility: Virginia Mason Medical Center, Seattle, WA
Region: Region I
Setting: Acute Care – Trauma Level III
Contract: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour nights, 7:00 PM–7:30 AM
Hours: 36 hours/week
Weekend: Every other weekend
Holidays: Must be willing to work holidays

Required Certifications

• BLS
• ACLS
• NIHSS
• PALS
• Active WA RN license — facility is willing to wait for the license

Experience Required

• 1 year of ED experience
• Behavioral health experience required/preferred
• Travel experience is preferred; ideally 1–2 completed travel assignments
• Charge experience preferred
• Travelers may be used as charge nurses, particularly at night, if willing.

ED Details

• 17 beds, can flex to 22
• Approximately 66 patients/day
• Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4
• Comprehensive Stroke Center
• STEMI receiving facility
• Fast-track process through triage lobby
• Separate triage area
• 4 designated psychiatric rooms
• Heavy behavioral-health/psychosis population
• Common cases: stroke, STEMI, sepsis, chest pain, psychosis, behavioral health
• Pediatrics are rare (~1%) and generally treated/transferred

Skills / Clinical Experience

Candidate should be comfortable with:

• Stroke care
• STEMI/cardiac patients
• Sepsis
• Behavioral health
• Critical/unstable patients
• Insulin drips
• Cardiac drips
• Sedation
• Critical-care drips
• EKG/telemetry monitoring
• Blood draws/phlebotomy
• ABGs if experienced
• Respiratory treatments
• Triage experience is a plus

Scheduling

• 7 PM–7:30 AM
• Every other weekend
• Must work some holidays
• No call
• No floating requirement under normal circumstances
• Block scheduling not guaranteed
• Schedule is generally arranged in advance
• Start times can vary, but this specific need is nights

Floating – Important

The primary facility is Virginia Mason Medical Center, but the traveler may be required to float throughout Region I, including:

• St. Anne Hospital – Burien
• St. Francis Hospital – Federal Way
• Virginia Mason Medical Center – Seattle

Other Requirements

• Driver's license required at submission
• Royal Blue scrubs
• EPIC charting
• 1 shift of orientation with an experienced ED RN
• Hospital can cancel up to 4 shifts during a 13-week contract
• Guaranteed 36 hours/week
