RN – Progressive Care Unit (PCU)

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Registered Nurse (RN) to join a fast-paced Progressive Care Unit (PCU) providing care to adult and geriatric patients with complex cardiac, neurological, renal, and medical conditions.

The ideal candidate should demonstrate strong critical-thinking skills, effective communication, clinical judgment, and the ability to manage titratable medications while working collaboratively in a high-acuity environment.

Unit & Patient Information

• Department: Progressive Care Unit (PCU)
• Beds: 35
• Patient Ratio: Approximately 1:4–5
• Patient Population: Adults and geriatrics
• Environment: Fast-paced, high-acuity PCU
• Telemetry/Monitoring: Includes patients requiring continuous cardiac and EEG monitoring

Common Diagnoses & Patient Types

• Cardiac conditions
• Nephrology/renal patients
• Stroke/CVA
• Diabetes mellitus
• Patients requiring continuous EEG monitoring
• Other complex medical and progressive-care conditions

Required Certifications

• BLS
• ACLS
• NIHSS

Clinical Skills & Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive nursing care to PCU patients based on acuity and clinical needs.
• Perform ongoing assessments and recognize changes in patient condition.
• Manage complex cardiac and neurological patients.
• Monitor patients requiring continuous EEG and cardiac monitoring.
• Administer and manage titratable medications.
• Collaborate with physicians, ancillary departments, and the interdisciplinary care team.
• Demonstrate strong critical thinking, prioritization, and problem-solving abilities.

Common Titrated Medications

Experience with titratable medications such as:

• Cardizem
• Beta blockers
• Seizure medications

Staffing & Support

• Charge Nurse available on the unit.
• Nurse Aide/PCT support:
  • Approximately 1:10 or 2:20
• Nurses should be comfortable working collaboratively and assisting colleagues when needed.

Scheduling

• Day Shift: 6:30 AM – 7:00 PM
• Night Shift: 6:30 PM – 7:00 AM
• Weekend: Every other weekend
• Holidays: Every third holiday
• Call/Standby: None

Floating Requirements

Floating is required based on hospital staffing and patient-care needs.

RNs may float to:

• Medical-Surgical floors
• ICU
• Rehabilitation units

Candidates should be comfortable adapting to different patient populations and care environments.

Orientation & Competency

• First week: Facility/unit onboarding
• Floor orientation: Approximately 1–2 days
• Friday during orientation: Pass/Fail RN competency exam
  • Open-book exam covering skills learned during orientation
  • Necessary resources are provided
  • Minimum passing score: 90%
  • Failure to meet the required score may result in termination of the assignment

Important Compliance Requirements

50-Mile Radius Rule

• Candidate must reside outside a 50-mile radius of the facility.
• A driver's license is required at submission and will be used to verify the candidate's distance from the facility.
• Candidates cannot currently be full-time, part-time, or PRN with any facility associated with CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity.

Fingernail Policy

• Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient-care departments.
• Failure or refusal to comply with the nail policy may result in termination of the contract.

RTO Policy

• RTO must be submitted upfront.
• Maximum of 7 days of RTO per 13-week contract.
• Additional RTO will not be approved, including after submission.
