RN – LDRP | Labor, Delivery & Postpartum

 

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Registered Nurse (RN) to join a rural hospital's Labor, Delivery, Recovery & Postpartum (LDRP) unit. This role provides care for laboring patients and postpartum mother/baby couplets in a close-knit environment with limited specialty services.

The ideal candidate should be clinically independent, highly communicative, and comfortable managing both labor and postpartum patients in a rural setting.

Unit & Facility Details

  • Department: LDRP
  • Charting System: MEDITECH
  • L&D Beds: 4
  • Postpartum Beds: 7
  • Care Setting: Rural Hospital
  • NICU: More than 1 hour away
  • Scrubs: Provided
  • Orientation: 3 × 12-hour shifts

Required Certifications & Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of L&D experience required
  • BLS required
  • ACLS required
  • NRP required
  • Strong Labor & Delivery and postpartum experience
  • Ability to work independently in a rural hospital environment
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills

Patient Ratios

Ratios generally follow AWHONN guidelines:

  • Labor: 1:1–2
  • Postpartum: 1:2–3

Patient Population

Common patient populations include:

  • Patients greater than 35 weeks gestation in labor
  • Labor and delivery patients
  • Postpartum mother/baby couplets
  • Antepartum patients

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive care to laboring and postpartum patients.
  • Monitor maternal and fetal status throughout labor.
  • Perform ongoing assessments and recognize changes in patient condition.
  • Manage mother/baby couplet care.
  • Administer medications and IV therapies.
  • Collaborate with OB providers, surgery, and other members of the care team.
  • Provide patient education and postpartum support.
  • Maintain accurate documentation in MEDITECH.

Medication & Drip Management

RNs are required to manage medications and titratable therapies.

Antepartum/Labor

  • Magnesium
  • Oxytocin
  • Lactated Ringer's (LR)
  • Zofran
  • Other medications/IV therapies as clinically indicated

Postpartum

  • Prenatal vitamins
  • Ibuprofen
  • Acetaminophen
  • Percocet
  • Toradol

Neonatal & Respiratory Support

The unit may utilize neonatal respiratory support equipment including:

  • CPAP
  • BiPAP
  • High-flow oxygen

RNs should be comfortable troubleshooting equipment and recognizing when additional clinical support is required.

Fetal Monitoring

  • EFM System: OB TraceVue
  • Strong fetal monitoring and maternal assessment skills are expected.

Cesarean Section Responsibilities

  • Surgery is responsible for the C-section procedure.
  • LDRP RNs circulate for the baby and support the delivery team as required.

Scheduling

  • Shift: 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM / 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM
  • Block Scheduling: Available
  • Weekend: Every third weekend
  • Holidays: Based on availability and unit scheduling

Floating

Floating may be required based on hospital needs.

RNs may float to Med-Surg/PCU (MSP) or the Emergency Department for helping-hand assignments, primarily including 1:1 patient sitting/observation.

Rural Hospital Environment

This is a rural hospital with limited specialty services, and the nearest NICU is more than one hour away. Nurses must be comfortable practicing independently while recognizing when escalation and additional support are needed.

Important Compliance Requirements

50-Mile Radius Rule

  • Candidates must reside outside a 50-mile radius of the facility.
  • Candidates may not currently be full-time, part-time, or PRN with any facility associated with CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity.

RTO Policy

  • RTO must be submitted upfront.
  • Maximum of 7 days of RTO per 13-week contract.
  • Additional RTO will not be approved, including after submission.

Fit Testing / Facial Hair

Clinicians must successfully complete the required respiratory fit testing.

  • Primary or secondary fit testing may be completed using approved 3M respirators.
  • If the initial fit test cannot be passed, a Portacount test may be required.
  • Portacount testing cannot be completed for clinicians with facial hair that prevents proper respirator fit.
  • A PAPR cannot be provided onsite solely as an alternative for failure related to facial hair.
  • If required facial hair cannot be removed and the clinician cannot meet the facility's respiratory protection requirements, the contract may be canceled.
