RN – Inpatient Rehabilitation / Med Surg

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Registered Nurse (RN) to join a 35-bed Inpatient Rehabilitation unit within a Level II Trauma facility. This role focuses on caring for adult and geriatric patients recovering from neurological conditions, strokes, spinal cord injuries, amputations, brain injuries, and other complex medical conditions.

The ideal candidate should be compassionate, organized, collaborative, and comfortable working in a rehabilitation-focused environment while supporting patients through their recovery journey.

Patient Population

Common diagnoses and patient types include:

• Stroke/CVA
• Spinal Cord Injury (SCI)
• Amputations
• Brain Injury (BI)
• Recovery following critical illness
• Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
• Parkinson's disease
• Other neurological and rehabilitation conditions

Clinical Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive nursing care to rehabilitation patients.
• Perform assessments and monitor changes in patient condition.
• Administer medications, antibiotics, anticoagulants, and antiplatelet therapies.
• Support patients with neurological and functional impairments.
• Collaborate with therapy teams and the interdisciplinary care team.
• Promote patient independence, safety, and recovery.
• Provide patient and family education.
• Maintain accurate and timely documentation in EPIC.
• Demonstrate strong organization, prioritization, and clinical judgment.

Medication Management

RNs are not required to titrate drips on this unit.

Common medications/therapies include:

• Antibiotics
• Anticoagulation
• Antiplatelet medications

Staffing & Support

• Charge Nurse: Available on each shift
• Nurse Aide/PCT Support: Approximately 1:10–15
• Strong interdisciplinary collaboration with rehabilitation and therapy teams

Scheduling

• Day Shift: 6:30 AM – 7:00 PM
• Night Shift: 6:30 PM – 7:00 AM
• Scheduling: Cyclic self-scheduling
• Weekend: Minimum every 3rd weekend
• Holidays: Minimum 2 holidays
• Call/Standby: None

Floating

Floating is required based on staffing and operational needs.

• RNs may float to Med-Surg units.
• Candidates should be comfortable adapting to a different patient population and care environment when required.

Orientation

• Classroom/facility orientation
• Followed by 2 × 12-hour unit shifts with appropriate orientation/precepting

Required Compliance

50-Mile Radius Rule

• Candidates must reside outside a 50-mile radius of the facility.
• A driver's license is required at submission and will be used to determine the candidate's distance from the facility.
• Candidates may not currently be full-time, part-time, or PRN with any facility associated with CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity.

Orientation Competency Exam

• RN must complete a pass/fail open-book exam on Friday during orientation.
• The exam covers skills learned during orientation.
• Necessary resources are provided to support successful completion.
• Minimum passing score: 90%.
• Failure to achieve the required score may result in termination of the assignment.

Fingernail Policy

• Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient-care departments.
• Refusal to comply with the facility's nail policy may result in termination of the contract.

RTO Policy

• RTO must be submitted upfront.
• Maximum of 7 days of RTO per 13-week contract.
• Additional RTO will not be approved, including after submission.
