Description

Registered Nurse (RN) – Med-Surg / Pediatrics
 

Department: Med-Surg Pediatrics
Patient Population: Adult & Pediatric
Unit Capacity: 17 Beds – 14 Inpatient / 3 Observation
Shift: 12-Hour Shifts
Schedule: 7:00 AM–7:00 PM / 7:00 PM–7:00 AM
Required Certifications: BLS, PALS
Scrub Color: Navy Blue
Weekend Requirement: As Needed
Holiday Requirement: None
Floating: ED / ICU for 1:1 Patient Care

 

Position Overview

We are seeking a compassionate and adaptable Registered Nurse (RN) to join a 17-bed Med-Surg/Pediatric unit caring for both adult and pediatric patients.

Pediatric nursing experience is preferred but not required. The ideal candidate will have strong communication skills, a team-oriented approach, sound clinical judgment, and the confidence to ask questions when clarification is needed. This is a collaborative environment where nurses are expected to work independently while maintaining excellent communication with the care team.

No clinical involvement is required as part of the pre-submission process.

 

Unit & Patient Population

  • 17 total beds
    • 14 inpatient beds
    • 3 observation beds
  • Patient population includes adults and pediatric patients
  • Common diagnoses include:
    • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
    • Altered mental status
    • Pneumonia
    • COPD
    • Other general medical conditions

Nurse-to-Patient Ratios

  • Days: 1:4
  • Nights: 1:5

Clinical Responsibilities

The RN will be responsible for providing comprehensive nursing care to a diverse adult and pediatric patient population, including:

  • Performing assessments and monitoring patient conditions.
  • Administering medications and treatments according to orders and facility protocols.
  • Monitoring patient response to treatment.
  • Providing safe and compassionate care to pediatric and adult patients.
  • Collaborating with providers and multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
  • Maintaining accurate and timely clinical documentation.
  • Communicating effectively with patients, families, and team members.
  • Escalating concerns and changes in patient condition appropriately.

IV Medications & Drips

  • RNs are not required to titrate continuous drips.
  • Medications commonly encountered may include:
    • Electrolyte replacements
    • Hypertensive medications
    • Diuretics
  • Hypertensive or hypotensive medications are not titrated by the RN.
  • Continuous diuretic infusions are rare.

Charge Nurse & Support Staff

Charge Nurse

  • Charge Nurse is available on each shift.
  • Charge Nurses do take a patient assignment based on staffing and unit needs.

Nurse Aides

  • Days: 2 Nurse Aides
  • Nights: 1 Nurse Aide
  • Approximately 2 aides per 15 patients when fully staffed.

Pediatric Coverage

  • A Pediatrician is not physically in-house 24/7.
  • Pediatrician coverage is available on call.
  • Pediatric patients are not managed by the hospitalist service.

Respiratory Support

  • No mechanical ventilators are utilized on the Med-Surg/Pediatric unit.
  • Occasional BiPAP patients may be cared for.
  • Respiratory Therapy primarily manages BiPAP and respiratory equipment.

Telemetry

  • ICU monitors provide telemetry monitoring and rhythm interpretation.
  • Med-Surg/Pediatric nurses are responsible for applying telemetry to patients.
  • Nurses monitor and interpret telemetry strips as part of patient care.

Schedule & Scheduling

  • Day Shift: 7:00 AM–7:00 PM
  • Night Shift: 7:00 PM–7:00 AM
  • 12-hour shifts
  • Self-scheduling available
  • Weekend requirement is as needed
  • No holiday requirement

Floating Requirements

Travel RNs may be asked to float based on staffing and patient-care needs:

  • Emergency Department (ED)
  • Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

Floating assignments are generally for 1:1 patient care/sitter-type support, as needed.

Orientation

  • Standard unit-specific orientation: 1 × 12-hour shift
  • Additional orientation may be provided when clinically appropriate:
    • 1 day shift
    • 1 night shift

Dress Code

  • Navy blue scrubs

Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate should demonstrate:

  • Strong communication skills.
  • Motivation and a positive approach to patient care.
  • Professional and approachable demeanor.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Adaptability when caring for both adult and pediatric patients.
  • Strong practical nursing skills.
  • Willingness to ask questions whenever clarification is needed.
  • Attention to detail, particularly with clinical documentation.

Pediatric experience is preferred but not mandatory.

Fit Testing & Facial Hair Requirements

Candidates with facial hair must be able to successfully complete either the Primary or Secondary fit test using the approved 3M respirators:

  • 3M Aura 1860 (small or regular)
  • 3M 1870+

If the candidate cannot pass the required fit test:

  • A Portacount test would be required.
  • Portacount testing cannot be performed on clinicians with facial hair.
  • PAPR cannot be completed onsite solely because of facial hair-related fit-test failure.
  • If required fit testing cannot be completed because the candidate is unable to remove facial hair, the contract may be canceled.

Submission & Compliance Requirements

Radius Requirement

  • 50-mile radius rule applies.
  • Candidates must reside outside the 50-mile radius.
  • Candidates may not be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any facility associated with CommonSpirit, including CHI and/or Dignity.

Requested Time Off (RTO)

  • All RTO must be submitted upfront.
  • Maximum RTO: 7 days per 13-week contract.
  • Additional RTO will not be approved after submission.
  • RTO requests submitted after the candidate has been submitted will not be considered.
