RN – Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced ICU Registered Nurse (RN) to join an 8-bed Intensive Care Unit in a fast-paced acute care environment. This opportunity is well suited for an ICU RN with strong critical-care fundamentals, telemetry interpretation skills, and experience caring for medically complex patients.

Unit & Facility Details

• Department: Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
• Unit Size: 8 beds
• EMR: Cerner
• Patient Population: Primarily Medical ICU patients
• Typical Ratio: 1:1–2
• Trauma/Facility: Acute Care
• First to Float: Traveler will be expected to float to sister facilities and, when needed, the Med-Surg unit at Woodland
• Woodland Med-Surg: Maximum assignment of 4 patients when floated
• Mid-shift floating to another facility is rare but may occur

Required Qualifications & Certifications

• Minimum 2 years of ICU experience
• BLS
• ACLS
• NIHSS
• PALS – Required
• Strong ability to read and interpret EKG/telemetry strips
• Experience with mechanical ventilation
• Critical-care/Medical ICU experience preferred

Clinical Environment

• Primarily cares for patients with common Medical ICU diagnoses
• Mechanical ventilators: Yes
• Telemetry: Yes
• Nurses must independently read and interpret EKG strips
• Hospitalist/Intensivist available in-house
• Respiratory Therapy: 24/7
• Pharmacy: 24/7
• IV Team: Not available
• Nurse aides available based on census and staffing needs

Charge & Staffing

• Charge Nurse present on the unit
• Charge Nurse generally does not take a patient assignment
• Charge Nurse provides break relief as needed
• Staffing and patient assignments are based on census and acuity

Schedule

• Shift: 12-hour shifts
• Shift Times: 7:00 AM–7:30 PM / 7:00 PM–7:30 AM
• Bedside report
• Every other weekend
• Holidays rotate with core staff
• Self-scheduling is utilized, subject to manager approval and staffing balance
• Schedules are released approximately 4 weeks in advance
• Travelers may access schedules remotely
• Opportunities for extra shifts and shift trades are available
• Block scheduling is generally not available
• OT and additional shifts may be available

Orientation

• 1–2 floor-specific orientation shifts with a preceptor
• Additional onboarding requirements may apply prior to acceptance

Prescreen & Compliance Requirements

• Two supervisory references are required at submission:
  • One reference within the last 12 months
  • One reference within the last 3 years
  • Charge Nurse references are acceptable
• Driver’s License copy required at submission to validate legal name
• Pulse profile must match the candidate’s government-issued ID
• Candidates must not have been directly employed (FT, PT, or PRN) by any facility associated with CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity within the past 12 months
• Candidates previously employed PRN through an outside staffing firm may be considered

Dysrhythmia Exam Requirement

• Relias Dysrhythmia Exam is required prior to acceptance
• Must be completed within 24–48 hours
• Pass/fail examination
• Two attempts are permitted:
  • Test A must be completed first
  • Test B is assigned for the second attempt if needed
• Screenshot showing the number of attempts is required
• A Relias Dysrhythmia Exam completed within the previous 12 months may be accepted
• Failure of the second attempt results in the candidate being designated DNU for CommonSpirit Arizona and Sacramento

Dress Code

• Navy scrubs
• Undershirts must be navy, white, or black
• Scrub jackets are optional but must be navy

Additional Unit Information

• The ICU features a horseshoe-style layout
• PACU is located adjacent to the ICU
• The unit provides a supportive environment for an ICU traveler with solid foundational critical-care experience
• Strong teamwork, adaptability, communication, and independent clinical judgment are important for success in this role
