Respiratory Therapist – Day
Work Location: SSH – Hampton Roads
Region: Critical Illness & Rehab
Engagement Type: Contract

Schedule: 12-hour Day Shifts | 3 shifts/week | 36 hours/week
Job Summary:
The Respiratory Therapist provides quality and intensive respiratory care to patients in a critical illness and rehabilitation setting. The RT evaluates patients, recommends treatment plans, administers prescribed respiratory therapies, manages ventilatory equipment, assists with respiratory procedures, and provides patient education while working within the scope of professional licensure.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform comprehensive respiratory assessments and recommend appropriate treatment plans.
- Provide intensive respiratory care with minimal supervision.
- Provide medically prescribed patient transport into and out of the facility.
- Administer prescribed respiratory treatments using:
- Invasive and non-invasive ventilatory equipment
- Oxygen delivery systems
- Aerosol and nebulizer devices
- Administer prescribed medications, humidification, ventilation, and oxygen therapy.
- Perform chest physiotherapy and secretion-clearance treatments.
- Perform suctioning using oropharyngeal, nasal, and tracheal techniques.
- Perform pulse oximetry and capnography monitoring.
- Review patient chest X-rays and identify the need for further respiratory evaluation.
- Perform 12-lead EKGs and basic arrhythmia recognition.
- Perform pulmonary function studies, including NIF and VC.
- Assist with respiratory procedures, including:
- Bronchoscopy
- Percutaneous tracheostomy
- Chest tube placement
- Perform chest drainage using PleurX catheters or similar devices when applicable.
- Provide tracheostomy care, including insertion and removal of tracheostomy tubes.
- Perform arterial puncture and evaluate ventilation efficiency.
- Follow applicable laboratory testing procedures where required, including specimen handling, equipment operation, documentation, quality control, and maintenance.
- Perform CPR according to BLS and ACLS guidelines.
- Perform insertion and removal of endotracheal tubes using free-hand and/or video laryngoscope techniques.
- Set up, self-test, operate, maintain, and monitor mechanical ventilators.
- Assist with preventative maintenance and repair of respiratory equipment.
- Accurately document respiratory treatments, patient responses, and pre/post assessments.
- Communicate with attending and pulmonary physicians regarding treatment effectiveness.
- Provide appropriate shift-to-shift handoff communication.
- Maintain accurate respiratory therapy charging, data entry, verification, and correction of errors.
- Educate patients regarding treatments, equipment, and respiratory care needs at discharge.
Required Qualifications:
- Current state Respiratory Therapy license
- Active CRT or RRT credential from NBRC or state equivalent
- BLS certification required prior to first shift
- ACLS certification required prior to first shift
- Strong respiratory assessment and patient-care skills
Highly Desired:
- Minimum 2 years of bedside clinical experience
