Roles & Responsibilities – Speech-Language Pathologist

• Evaluate and treat patients with speech, language, cognitive, communication, and swallowing disorders.
• Perform comprehensive speech-language and swallowing assessments based on physician orders and patient needs.
• Conduct bedside clinical swallow evaluations and identify patients at risk for aspiration or other swallowing complications.
• Perform or assist with video swallowing studies when qualified and required.
• Develop individualized treatment plans based on assessment findings and patient goals.
• Provide speech, language, cognitive-communication, and swallowing therapy to assigned patients.
• Treat patients with stroke, traumatic brain injury (TBI), neurological disorders, trauma, cognitive impairments, and dysphagia.
• Provide appropriate patient and family education regarding communication strategies, swallowing precautions, diet recommendations, and therapy plans.
• Recommend appropriate diet modifications, swallowing strategies, and compensatory techniques within scope of practice.
• Monitor patient progress and modify treatment plans based on response to therapy.
• Document evaluations, treatment sessions, progress, recommendations, and discharge information accurately in Cerner PowerChart.
• Collaborate with physicians, nurses, dietitians, PTs, OTs, rehab aides, and other healthcare professionals.
• Participate in interdisciplinary care planning and patient discharge planning.
• Follow facility policies, infection-control procedures, patient-safety standards, and professional SLP practice guidelines.
• Provide care across inpatient, outpatient, and rehabilitation settings according to the facility's specific assignment.
• Manage assigned caseloads, which may be up to approximately 13 inpatient patients per day or up to 9 outpatient patients per day, depending on the assigned area.
• Work with rehab aides and other therapy staff to support safe and effective patient care.
• Participate in department-specific orientation and Cerner training as required.
