Unit Overview

The Labor & Delivery (L&D) Department at St. Joseph Campus provides care for pregnant women during labor, delivery, and the immediate postpartum period.

The Labor & Delivery RN supports expecting and new mothers through routine and complicated deliveries while working closely with physicians and the healthcare team to promote safe outcomes for both mother and baby.

Key Responsibilities

Labor & Delivery Care

• Provide nursing care to women during labor and delivery.
• Monitor patients throughout the labor process and after birth.
• Assess maternal and fetal status and respond appropriately to changes in condition.
• Provide physical and emotional support to patients and their families.
• Assist with management of complications during labor and delivery.
• Collaborate with physicians and other healthcare professionals to support safe deliveries.
• Provide care during the immediate postpartum period.
• Promote a safe and supportive environment for mothers and newborns.

Patient Education

• Provide one-on-one education to pregnant women and new mothers.
• Educate patients regarding pregnancy, labor, delivery, postpartum care, and newborn needs.
• Encourage healthy practices and promote maternal-child bonding.
• Communicate care instructions clearly to patients and families.

Nursing Responsibilities

• Perform patient assessments and ongoing monitoring.
• Provide medications and treatments according to established protocols.
• Document patient care and clinical findings accurately.
• Communicate changes in patient condition to physicians and the healthcare team.
• Maintain patient safety, confidentiality, and professional nursing standards.
• Provide individualized care based on each patient's needs.

Required Qualifications & Skills

• Active RN State License – Required
• BLS – Required
• Labor & Delivery nursing experience – Required
• L&D Skills competency – Required
• Completion of the required Labor & Delivery RN skills assessment/exam
• Completion of required RN Pharmacology assessment
• Strong knowledge of labor and delivery nursing practices
• Ability to provide safe care to pregnant and postpartum patients
• Strong clinical judgment and patient assessment skills
• Effective communication and teamwork skills
