Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Psychiatric Registered Nurse (RN) to provide compassionate, safe, and patient-centered care in a Geropsychology/Behavioral Health setting. The unit primarily serves adults aged 60+ with conditions including dementia, depression, suicidal ideation, and other psychiatric or behavioral health needs.

The unit consists of 16 private rooms with an approximate 1:6–7 nurse-to-patient ratio, supported by nursing technicians based on patient census and acuity.
 

Key Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive nursing care to geriatric psychiatric and behavioral health patients.
• Assess patients' physical, psychological, and behavioral needs.
• Administer medications and monitor patients for therapeutic response and adverse reactions.
• Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized nursing care plans.
• Monitor patients for changes in mental status, behavior, mood, and safety risks.
• Provide appropriate interventions for patients experiencing depression, dementia, suicidal ideation, or behavioral concerns.
• Perform IV management and blood draws as required.
• Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation.
• Collaborate with physicians, therapists, nursing technicians, and the interdisciplinary care team.
• Maintain a safe environment and follow behavioral health and patient-safety protocols.
• Respond appropriately to psychiatric and medical emergencies.
• Float within the nurse's scope of practice when required, including providing support to Med/Surg units as a helping hand.
• Follow all facility policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.

Required Qualifications

• Active and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license.
• Minimum 2 years of RN experience.
• Previous Psychiatric, Behavioral Health, or Geropsychology nursing experience preferred/required for the role.
• Experience caring for geriatric patients is strongly preferred.
• Graduate of an accredited nursing program through ACEN or CCNE.
• Current BLS certification.
• Current CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) certification/card.
• Ability to perform blood draws.
• Demonstrated ability to manage IVs.
• Recent Epic EMR experience within the last 12 months.
• Willingness and ability to float within the appropriate scope of practice.

Patient Population

The unit primarily cares for patients age 60 and older who may present with:

• Dementia
• Depression
• Suicidal ideation
• Behavioral health conditions
• Psychiatric disorders
• Complex medical and psychiatric needs

Work Environment & Safety

The unit utilizes Centrak safety badges to enhance staff safety. Protective Services can be immediately dispatched when the safety system is activated. Staff have access to additional support from Protective Services when needed.

Compliance Requirements

Candidates must be prepared to complete required facility onboarding and compliance requirements, which may include:

• BLS
• CPI certification
• Nursing license verification
• Education verification
• Background screening
• OIG/EPLS screening
• Drug screening
• Health screening and required immunizations
• TB/PPD or IGRA testing
• Facility competency and specialty assessments
• Required nursing submission and onboarding documentation

Time-Off & Scheduling Requirements

• RTO (requested time off) must be submitted at the time of application/submission.
• Maximum 7 days of RTO will be considered.
• No RTO will be accepted during the first two weeks of the assignment.
• Block schedule requests are not accepted.
• Candidates must be flexible to float within their appropriate scope of practice.

This position requires an interview prior to selection. Candidates should provide their availability for an interview when applying.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is an experienced Psychiatric or Geropsych RN who is comfortable caring for older adults with complex behavioral and psychiatric needs, can safely manage IVs and perform blood draws, and is willing to support other units when needed.
