An RN Pre-Op Specialty (Registered Nurse, Pre-Operative Specialty) refers to a specialized nursing role focused on the care of patients before they undergo surgical or invasive procedures. Pre-op nursing is a critical component of perioperative nursing (which covers care before, during, and after surgery). Pre-op nurses work primarily in hospitals, ambulatory surgical centers, and outpatient clinics.
Key Responsibilities of a Pre-Op RNComprehensive Patient Assessment:
Evaluating the patient's physical and emotional status, taking vital signs, reviewing medical histories, and checking for pre-existing conditions or potential surgical risks.
Safety & Verification Checks: Confirming the correct surgical site (often marking it alongside the surgeon), verifying patient identity, ensuring informed consent is signed, and checking that required lab work or diagnostic tests are on file.
Pre-Procedure Preparation: Starting IV lines, drawing blood, administering pre-operative medications (such as antibiotics, sedatives, or specialized pre-op protocols), and having the patient change into a surgical gown.
