Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Registered Nurse (RN) to join the Medical-Surgical department at OSF. The ideal candidate will have at least 1 year of MedSurg nursing experience, strong clinical skills, and the ability to provide safe, compassionate care in a fast-paced hospital environment.

The MedSurg department includes 23 beds on the 4th floor and 14 beds on the 3rd floor. Typical nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:5, with ratios occasionally increasing to 1:7 based on department needs.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive nursing care to Medical-Surgical patients.
• Assess, monitor, and document patient conditions and responses to treatment.
• Administer medications and treatments according to physician orders and hospital protocols.
• Monitor patients on telemetry and sign off on telemetry strips throughout the shift.
• Collaborate with physicians, respiratory therapists, PCTs, and other members of the healthcare team.
• Recognize and respond appropriately to changes in patient condition.
• Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation.
• Participate in patient education and discharge planning.
• Follow all hospital policies, procedures, and patient-safety standards.
• Maintain effective communication with patients, families, and interdisciplinary team members.

Common Patient Diagnoses

The MedSurg department commonly cares for patients with:

• NSTEMI
• COPD
• Pneumonia (PNA)
• Sepsis
• Acute Kidney Injury (AKI)
• Other general Medical-Surgical conditions

Required Qualifications

• Active Illinois RN license, or confirmation that the license application process has been initiated.
• Minimum 1 year of MedSurg RN experience.
• Current BLS certification.
• Strong clinical assessment and communication skills.
• Ability to work 12-hour day or night shifts.
• Candidates must understand and comply with OSF's Drug-Free Campus policy and successfully complete a negative drug screen for all required panels.

Department Information

• Patient Ratio: 1:5 ideal; may increase to 1:7.
• PCT Ratio: Approximately 1 PCT to 8 patients.
• Telemetry: Yes. Monitor Technicians (MTs) are scheduled and read strips; RNs are responsible for signing off on strips throughout the shift.
• Drip Titration: RNs are not required to titrate drips.
• Charge Nurse/House Supervisor: Available.
• Respiratory Support: Home units and heated high-flow oxygen are available; heated high flow is currently the highest level of hospital respiratory support.
• On-Call Requirement: None.
• Low Census: May occasionally occur but is rare.
• Floating: Candidates may float to ICU, ER, or BHC if they have the appropriate level of experience. Otherwise, no floating outside MedSurg is required.
• Scrubs: Any scrub color is acceptable.
• Footwear: Closed-toe shoes required.
• Orientation: One department-specific orientation shift. A detailed orientation binder will be provided.

OSF Important Notes

Local Rate: Candidates whose permanent address is within 50 miles are considered local. A $25 reduction applies to the regular and overtime bill rates.

Call-Off Policy: Clinicians may call off the equivalent of 12 hours per 13-week assignment without penalty or the need to pay for the shift.

Orientation: 12 hours of orientation are non-billable. Guaranteed hours do not apply during orientation.
