Emergency Department Registered Nurse (ER RN)
Department: Emergency Department
Trauma Level: Level I Trauma Center
Shift: 12-hour shifts
Shift Options: Days, Mid Shifts, Nights
Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
Call Requirement: None
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Emergency Department Registered Nurse (ER RN) to join a high-acuity, Level I Trauma Center. The department provides care to a diverse patient population ranging from newborns to elderly patients and manages everything from minor illnesses and injuries to critically ill and trauma patients.
The ED features 65 private beds, including 2 trauma bays, with typical nurse-to-patient ratios of 1:3–5, depending on patient acuity and department needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive emergency nursing care to patients across the lifespan.
- Assess, triage, stabilize, and monitor patients with a wide variety of medical and traumatic conditions.
- Care for critically ill patients, including patients experiencing cardiac arrest, stroke, myocardial infarction, and other life-threatening emergencies.
- Manage and titrate critical care medications, including vasopressors, cardiac medications, antihypertensives, and other emergency drips.
- Recognize and appropriately respond to life-threatening cardiac rhythms.
- Participate in trauma and resuscitation care as appropriate.
- Administer medications and treatments safely and efficiently.
- Perform assessments, interventions, and ongoing reassessments based on patient condition.
- Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, respiratory therapists, ED technicians, and other members of the healthcare team.
- Draw blood specimens and perform other nursing procedures as required.
- Maintain accurate and timely patient documentation.
- Provide patient and family education and support throughout the emergency care process.
Required Certifications
Candidates must have:
- BLS
- ACLS
- ENPC or PALS
- TNCC or TNS
Required Experience & Skills
- Strong Emergency Department nursing experience.
- At least 2 years of nursing experience preferred.
- At least 1 previous travel assignment preferred.
- Proficiency caring for high-acuity and critically ill patients.
- Demonstrated ability to manage and titrate vasopressors and other critical care infusions.
- Strong cardiac rhythm recognition and emergency response skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced Level I Trauma environment.
Preferred Experience
- SANE RN experience.
- Experience working in a teaching hospital/residency program.
- Previous Level I or Level II trauma experience.
Patient Population & Common Conditions
The Emergency Department treats patients across the lifespan, including:
- Newborns through geriatric patients
- Minor illnesses and injuries
- Critically ill patients
- Cardiac arrest
- Stroke
- Heart attack/MI
- Level I and II trauma
- A broad range of medical and surgical emergencies
Specialized trauma teams care for Level I/II trauma patients initially in the trauma bays. Travelers may care for trauma patients after stabilization and transfer to an ED pod.
Critical Care & Equipment
- Drips: Nurses titrate a wide variety of medications, including vasopressors, cardiac drips, and antihypertensive medications.
- Respiratory Equipment: Vents, CPAP, BiPAP, and high-flow oxygen are available. Respiratory Therapists provide support.
- Telemetry: Monitor technicians are available. RNs must independently recognize and respond to significant and life-threatening rhythms.
- Monitors: Philips monitors; travelers will receive orientation to the equipment.
- Imaging: Radiology staff or transport personnel transport patients to X-ray and CT.
- Labs: Nurses and ED technicians draw labs. Phlebotomy may draw labs for boarding patients.
Department Staffing
- Physicians: Minimum of 3 attending physicians are present at all times, with staffing varying based on time of day.
- Charge Nurses: Two charge nurses are assigned:
- One manages incoming patients and telemetry radios.
- One manages department-wide operational needs.
- Charge nurses do not routinely take patient assignments but may assist as the second nurse during traumas or critical cases.
- House Supervisor: Available 24/7.
- ED Technicians: Approximately 1 ED tech to 9 patients.
Schedule
The department operates 12-hour shifts with multiple start times:
Day Shift:
- 7:00 AM
- 8:00 AM
- 9:00 AM
Mid Shifts:
- 10:00 AM
- 11:00 AM
- 12:00 PM
- 1:00 PM
- 3:00 PM
Night Shift:
- 7:00 PM
Positions are assigned to a specific shift and do not routinely rotate between days and nights.
Travelers do not self-schedule. Scheduling is handled by the scheduling manager. Candidates may submit requested time off with their contract, which will be reviewed based on department scheduling needs. Block scheduling may be accommodated when operationally possible.
Weekend & Holiday Requirements
- Weekend: Every other weekend on a rotating basis.
- For most shifts, weekends are Saturday/Sunday.
- 7:00 AM–7:00 PM shift: Weekend requirement is Friday/Saturday.
- Holidays: Every other holiday or based on department needs. Holiday requirements may be negotiated as part of the contract request.
Call & Floating
Call: No call or standby requirement for travelers.
Floating: Travelers may very rarely be floated to another unit as a "Help All" resource. This is uncommon, and ED travelers are not expected to take a full patient assignment on another unit.
Dress Code
- No specific scrub color required.
- Tasteful professional scrubs.
- Undershirts should be solid-colored.
OSF Submission Requirements
Candidates submitted for consideration must provide:
- Last four (4) digits of Social Security Number
- Middle initial
- Requested time off
- Active Illinois RN license or confirmation that the license application process has been initiated
- Confirmation that the candidate understands OSF's Drug-Free Campus policy and will successfully complete the required negative drug screen for all panels
OSF Important Notes
Local Rate: Applies to clinicians whose permanent address is within 50 miles. A $25 reduction applies to regular and overtime bill rates.
Call-Off Policy: Clinicians may call off the equivalent of 12 hours every 13 weeks without penalty or the requirement to pay for the shift.
Orientation: 12 hours of orientation are non-billable, and guaranteed hours do not apply during orientation.
