Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Intensive Care Unit Registered Nurse (ICU RN) to provide high-acuity care to critically ill patients in an 8-bed ICU. The ideal candidate will have strong critical-care experience and be comfortable managing complex patients, titrating continuous infusions, and performing advanced bedside nursing procedures.

Typical nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:2, with assignments occasionally increasing to 1:3 based on patient acuity, overflow, or stepdown needs.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive nursing care to critically ill patients.
• Perform ongoing assessments and recognize changes in patient condition.
• Manage patients requiring complex medical and postoperative care.
• Safely administer and titrate continuous IV medications.
• Care for patients with invasive monitoring, including central and arterial lines.
• Participate in emergency response and cardiac arrest situations according to AHA guidelines.
• Assist with bedside bronchoscopy procedures.
• Manage patients requiring mechanical ventilation and other advanced respiratory support.
• Collaborate closely with intensivists, hospitalists, respiratory therapists, and the interdisciplinary care team.
• Maintain accurate clinical documentation and communicate changes in patient condition promptly.
• Follow infection prevention, patient safety, and hospital policies.

Required Qualifications

• Current Registered Nurse (RN) license or eligibility as required by the facility.
• Current ACLS certification.
• Demonstrated ICU/critical-care experience.
• Strong critical-thinking and clinical assessment skills.
• Ability to manage high-acuity patients and multiple titratable infusions.
• Proficiency with central line and arterial line care.
• Knowledge of cardiac arrest protocols and AHA guidelines.

Common Patient Diagnoses

The ICU commonly cares for patients with:

• Sepsis
• ARDS
• Acute respiratory failure (ARF)
• Cardiac dysrhythmias
• Complex postoperative conditions
• Overdose
• Behavioral health patients with significant medical complexities
• Other critically ill medical and surgical conditions

Critical Care Skills & Responsibilities

The ICU RN must be comfortable with:

• Central line care
• Arterial line management
• Bedside bronchoscopy support
• Cardiac arrest response
• Mechanical ventilation
• Hemodynamic monitoring
• High-acuity patient management
• Titration of critical-care medications

Common Titratable Drips

• Cardizem
• Propofol
• Amiodarone
• Norepinephrine
• Precedex

• Critical Care Physicians: In-house 7:00 AM–7:00 PM
• Respiratory Therapy: Available 24/7 in the ICU
• Telemetry/Monitor Techs: No dedicated monitor techs; telemetry monitoring is not utilized on this unit.

Respiratory Equipment

The ICU has access to:

• Mechanical ventilators
• BiPAP
• CPAP
• Heated high-flow oxygen

Respiratory Therapists are available 24/7 to assist with respiratory management and equipment.

Schedule

• Shift: 12-hour shifts
• Weekend: Every other weekend
• Holiday: Every other holiday
• Call/Standby: None

Floating Requirements

ICU nurses may be required to float to Medical-Surgical units in Peru and Ottawa, based on operational needs and appropriate assignment.

Dress Code

• Solid-color scrubs or approved OSF attire
• Must comply with OSF dress code and professional appearance policies.

Department Orientation

• 2 shifts of unit-specific orientation

Submission Requirements

Candidates submitted for consideration must provide:

• Last four (4) digits of Social Security Number
• Middle initial
• Requested time off
• Active Illinois license or confirmation that the license application process has been initiated
• Confirmation that the candidate understands OSF's Drug-Free Campus policy and will successfully complete the required negative drug screen for all panels

OSF Important Notes

Local Rate: Applies to clinicians whose permanent address is within 50 miles. A $25 reduction applies to regular and overtime bill rates.

Call-Off Policy: Clinicians may call off the equivalent of 12 hours every 13 weeks without penalty or the requirement to pay for the shift.

Orientation: 12 hours of orientation are non-billable, and guaranteed hours do not apply during orientation.
