ER RN โ Level 1 Trauma | Job Breakdown
Position: Emergency Room Registered Nurse (ER RN)
Department: Emergency Department
Trauma Level: Level 1
Setting: Acute Care
Beds: 65 private rooms + 2 trauma bays
Contract: 13 weeks
Guaranteed Hours: 48 hours/week
Shift: 1:00 PM โ 1:00 AM (12-hour evening shift)
๐ Schedule
- 12-hour evening shift: 1 PMโ1 AM
- Travelers do not self-schedule
- Scheduling manager creates the schedule
- Time-off requests can be submitted with the contract
- Block scheduling may be accommodated when possible
- Every other weekend required
- Holiday requirement: Every other holiday or based on department needs
- No call requirement
๐ฉโโ๏ธ Patient Ratio
- Approximately 1 RN : 3โ5 patients
- Ratio varies depending on patient acuity and department needs.
๐ Required Certifications
All of these are required:
- BLS
- ACLS
- PALS or ENPC
- TNCC or TNS
BSN: Not required
IL license: Required to submit, or license application must have been initiated.
๐ฅ Patient Population
This is a Level 1 Trauma ED, so the RN may care for:
- Newborns through geriatric patients
- Minor illnesses/injuries
- Critically ill patients
- Cardiac arrest
- Stroke
- Heart attacks
- Trauma patients
- Various medical and emergency conditions
Travelers generally will not be the primary nurse in the trauma bay initially. Trauma patients are managed by a specialized trauma team and travelers may take over care after stabilization and transfer to a pod.
๐ Required/Preferred Experience
Preferred:
- At least 2 years of nursing experience
- At least 1 previous travel assignment
- SANE RN experience
- Teaching-hospital/resident experience
๐ Critical Care / Drips
The ED manages various drips, so the RN should be comfortable with:
- Vasopressors
- Cardiac drips
- Antihypertensive medications
- Titration of medications
- Other critical-care infusions
โค๏ธ Cardiac / Telemetry
- Nurses must be able to interpret cardiac rhythms
- Recognize life-threatening rhythms
- ACLS knowledge is required
- Philips monitors are used
- Traveler will receive orientation to the monitors
- Monitor tech is available
๐ซ Respiratory Equipment
The ED has:
- Ventilators
- CPAP
- BiPAP
- High-flow oxygen
Respiratory therapists assist, but RNs should be able to troubleshoot and manage patients using these therapies.

- Nurses and ED techs draw labs
- Phlebotomy may draw labs for some boarding patients
๐ฅ Staffing/Support
- 2 charge nurses
- House supervisor available 24/7
- ED techs
- Monitor tech
- Respiratory therapists
- Radiology/transport staff
Charge nurses generally do not take regular assignments but may assist as the second nurse during traumas or critical situations.

- Very rare
- May be floated as a "help all" to another unit
- ED RN would not be expected to take a full team on another unit.
๐ Scrubs
- No specific scrub color
- Tasteful scrubs
- Solid-colored shirts underneath
โ ๏ธ OSF Requirements
- Local rate applies if permanent address is within 50 miles: $25 lower regular/OT bill rate.
- Call-off allowance: 12 hours per 13 weeks without penalty.
- 12 orientation hours are non-billable and do not count toward guaranteed hours.
- OSF is a Drug-Free Campus; negative drug screen required.
