Description

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive nursing care to adult and geriatric patients in a 35-bed PCU.
  • Maintain a typical 1:4–5 nurse-to-patient ratio while prioritizing care according to patient acuity.
  • Perform comprehensive assessments and ongoing monitoring of patients with complex acute-care conditions.
  • Care for patients with cardiac, nephrology, stroke, diabetes, and other medical diagnoses.
  • Monitor patients receiving continuous EEG monitoring and promptly report neurological changes.
  • Safely administer and titrate cardiac and seizure-related medications according to provider orders and facility protocols.
  • Titrate medications such as Cardizem, beta-blockers, and seizure medications while closely monitoring patient response.
  • Monitor cardiac rhythms, vital signs, neurological status, laboratory results, and other relevant clinical indicators.
  • Recognize deterioration in patient condition and initiate appropriate interventions or escalation of care.
  • Administer medications, IV therapies, and other treatments safely and accurately.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the EPIC EMR.
  • Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, charge nurses, patient care technicians, therapists, and other members of the healthcare team.
  • Delegate appropriate patient-care activities to nursing assistants/PCTs while maintaining accountability for patient care.
  • Provide patient and family education regarding medications, treatments, disease processes, and discharge planning.
  • Prepare patients for transfer, discharge, or escalation to a higher level of care.
  • Provide thorough shift-to-shift handoff communication.
  • Float to medical floors, ICU, or rehabilitation units when required by staffing needs.
  • Follow hospital policies, infection-control standards, medication-safety procedures, and patient-safety protocols.
  • Participate in orientation, competency validation, and required skills testing.
  • Maintain BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS competencies throughout the assignment.
Requirements Active RN license eligible for submission. Previous PCU/Progressive Care Unit, Telemetry, Step-Down, ICU, or comparable acute-care experience. Required certifications: BLS (AHA) ACLS (AHA) NIHSS BSN is not required. EPIC experience preferred/required for charting. Must be able to care for adult and geriatric patients with complex medical conditions. Experience with cardiac, nephrology, stroke, and diabetes patients. Experience with continuous EEG monitoring is beneficial. Must have experience titrating IV drips, including medications such as Cardizem, beta-blockers, and seizure medications. Strong assessment, critical-thinking, clinical judgment, and problem-solving skills. Strong communication and teamwork abilities. Positive attitude and willingness to assist coworkers in a fast-paced environment. Must successfully complete the orientation skills exam with a score of 90% or higher. Must provide a driver's license at submission for verification of the 50-mile radius requirement. Candidate must reside more than 50 miles from the facility according to the agency's radius rule. Candidate cannot currently be full-time, part-time, or PRN with any facility affiliated with CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity. Artificial nails are prohibited in patient-care departments. Must be available for 12-hour night shifts. Must work every other weekend and every third holiday. Must be willing to float to medical floors, ICU, or rehab as required. No call or standby requirement. RTO must be submitted upfront and is limited to 7 or fewer days per 13-week contract.
