Travel RN – Medical Surgical ICU (MS ICU)

12-Hour Night Shifts | 36 Hours/Week | 13-Week Contract

Position Overview

  • Shift: Nights, 6:30 PM – 6:30 AM
  • Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week
  • Shift Length: 12 hours
  • Experience Required: 2 years of recent ICU experience
  • Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS
  • Scrub Color: Navy Blue
  • Unit Size: 34 beds
  • Orientation: 2 unit-specific shifts
  • Interview: Required with unit leadership

Patient Population & Clinical Experience

This fast-paced, 34-bed ICU cares for adult and pediatric patients over 15 years old. Common diagnoses and patient populations include:

  • Respiratory failure and ARDS
  • Sepsis and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS)
  • Stroke and complex neurological conditions
  • Cardiogenic shock
  • Renal failure requiring CRRT
  • General surgery and cancer-related surgeries
  • GI bleeds
  • Psychiatric and overdose patients

Clinical Skills & Responsibilities

  • Manage ICU patients with 1:1–1:2 nurse-to-patient ratios.
  • Titrate vasopressors, paralytics, narcotics, sedation, and antiarrhythmics.
  • Interpret cardiac rhythms using Draeger monitoring systems.
  • Provide care for patients requiring ventilator support.
  • Work with advanced equipment, including arterial lines, central venous pressure monitoring, Swan-Ganz catheters, and ICP monitoring.
  • Participate in rapid response events and codes.

Experience with specialized equipment such as Impella, balloon pumps, CRRT, and neuro-interventional procedures is not required; training is available.

Scheduling & Requirements

  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • Holiday Requirement: 2 of 3 major holidays, every other holiday, or as needed based on unit requirements
  • Floating: Required to all inpatient units except Maternity and NICU
  • Scheduling: Manager-created schedule based on unit needs
  • Time Off: All requested time off must be submitted upfront. A maximum of 7 days of RTO is allowed per 13-week contract. Additional requests will not be approved.

Important Submission Requirements

  • Must have at least 2 years of recent ICU experience.
  • Must provide a valid driver's license at submission.
  • Candidates must live outside the 50-mile radius.
  • Candidates cannot currently work full-time, part-time, or PRN at any CommonSpirit-affiliated facility, including CHI and Dignity.
  • Artificial nails are prohibited in patient-care departments. Refusal to remove them may result in contract termination.
  • Nurses must pass an open-book skills exam during orientation with a minimum score of 90%. Failure to pass results in contract termination.
